Rugby Development | January Blitz Roundup

January was a busy month for the Rugby Development department with a number of different blitzes and workshops taking place throughout the province.

Among the different blitzes which took place, a tackle workshop was held for the first year students of Presentation Secondary School Tralee and Coláiste Íde agus Iosef Abbeyfeale.

Munster Rugby Participation Programme Co-Ordinator Ray Gadsden, Women’s Development Officer Willie Shubart and CCRO Brian O’Dowd were in attendance to conduct the workshop.

At the end of January, a 1st Year Emerging School Blitz was held in Bruff RFC which saw a number of schools in the area compete on the day.

An U14 Schools Blitz was also held at Munster Rugby’s Regional Centre of Excellent at Fethard Town Park in Tipperary.

Over 100 children took part on the day with six schools attending; Thurles CBS, Coláiste Mhuire Thurles, Cashel Community College, Abbey School Tipperary, Waterpark College and Coláiste Dún Lascaigh Cahir.

A 1st Year A School Blitz was held in Crescent College Comprehensive at the end of January which saw the Limerick school host Ardscoil Rís, St Munchin’s and Castletroy College. Each school had two teams participating and there were over 130 players involved on the day.

A second year blitz consisting of the same schools took place the following week.

A National School Blitz was also held in in Thomond RFC which had five local national schools in attendance with 150 players taking part on the day. CCRO Evan Cusack and Munster Rugby Girls Participation Officer Kenneth McNamara were in attendance alongside current Munster Rugby player Jack Daly and former Munster Rugby player Kiran McDonald.

A number of other blitzes also took place throughout the province in January including an U15 blitz in Musgrave Park and an U14/1st Year Blitz held in Midleton College.

Additional blitzes will be held throughout Munster in the weeks ahead.
