Report | Excellent Munster Clinch 17th Interpro Title After Buttimer Double

Munster have retained the 2026 Vodafone Women’s Interprovincial title after a double from Player of the Match Beth Buttimer clinched a 14-5 win over Leinster in a nail-biting final in Galway.

The game was on a knife-edge for the majority but Munster never trailed and tries from hooker Buttimer in the 20th and 69th minutes proved the difference. Caitríona Finn and Enya Breen landed the difficult conversions with Breen’s kick giving Munster an all-important two-score lead as Munster secured a record 17th Interprovincial title.

Valiant last-ditch Munster defence prevented a first-minute Leinster try after Sarah Delaney reacted quickest to an overthrown Munster lineout but a number of defenders threw themselves under the ball as Delaney looked to touch down.

A yellow card for Breen on three minutes after a deliberate knock-on gave Leinster further impetus but the Munster defence held firm while down to 14.

It was Munster who struck first after an evenly-matched early quarter with Buttimer showing her close-range finishing prowess.

Fittingly, the attack started when the front row of Buttimer and props Eilís Cahill and Siobhán McCarthy won a penalty on halfway.

Finn kicked deep into the Leinster half and Aoife Corey, Breen and Chisom Ugwueru made inroads down the left wing to move Munster deep into the Leinster 22.

When Munster got into the red zone, they made no mistake with Cahill nearly getting over before Buttimer plundered her seventh try of the Championship.

Leinster were testing Munster to the limit and hit back on 38 minutes when Dannah O’Brien kicked a penalty to the corner. Good maul defence from Munster stopped Leinster initially but after working the ball infield, Leinster caught Munster on the blindside and flanker Kathy Baker finished superbly in the left corner despite desperate last-ditch defence.

The conversion hit the woodwork and Munster led 7-5 at the break.

The second half was nip and tuck with Sally Kelly winning a vital turnover to relieve some early pressure before Clodagh O’Halloran’s line-speed forced a Leinster knock-on.

Leinster continued to turn the screw after winning a scrum penalty on 48 minutes but a superb Breen turnover deep inside our 22 saw Munster somehow maintain a slender lead.

Another massive defensive effort past the hour saw Munster hold up Erin King over the line and then force a knock-on from the resulting five-metre tap.

Replacement Katie Corrigan made a vital tackle out wide to force Leinster into touch and Ugwueru line-speed forced a Leinster forward pass as the Munster defence prevented Leinster from gaining further momentum.

Having soaked up the pressure, Munster struck  for the the all-important second try 11 minutes from the end.

Breen kicked a superb penalty to the left corner and Buttimer found Clodagh O’Halloran in the lineout with the Munster pack trundling forward for Buttimer to ground her second try.

With Munster now seven in front, the conversion was a crucial one and Breen showed her class with a brilliant strike to strech the lead to nine points with nine minutes remaining.

Up against the suffocating Munster defence, Leinster had a mountain to climb and it was Munster who came closest to scoring in the final minutes but McCarthy was held up over the line.

The hard-fought win for Matt Brown’s side deservedly clinched the Championship in a brilliant defence of their Interpro title.
