Club Notes | Kanturk RFC Host Annual Blitz Day

Our Rugby Development Officers were on the road again last week as they headed to Kanturk RFC for their annual National School Blitz Day.

This year saw the club host over 500 fifth and sixth class students from 19 different schools in the area.

We caught up with Kanturk RFC age-grade coach, Charles Daly, and Munster Club & Community Rugby Officer (CCRO), Daire Daly, to learn more about the event and how important it is for the club.

Speaking about the importance of the day, Charles said:

“I think it is a great chance for the kids to understand more about rugby and the fundamentals that are involved in the game. They also get to learn that there is a rugby club close by where they can come, try out and play if they enjoy the game.

“We have hosted this blitz for the last five years now and this year we have around 46 teams from 19 schools in the area taking part.

“What we hope to see now is that some of them will filter into the club for the forthcoming seasons.”

Fellow Kanturk man and now CCRO, Daire Daly, was also on hand in the North Cork club for the day and gave his insights on how important it is in encouraging children to take up the game of rugby.

“The most important thing is that the kids enjoy themselves and it is a great opportunity to introduce the game to them at a touch level and what we hope is that some of them come away from today and consider registering with the club for next season.

“The biggest thing I want them to take away from today is that they enjoy the rugby and have fun.

“Some of these kids may not play other sports, so it is great that we can show that rugby is for everyone and because of that they might realise that they do like it and as I said it might lead to some of them deciding to register for next season.”
