Women’s Weekend Preview

UL Bohemians players completed a momentous national double this year - INPHO/Dan Sheridan

A big weekend of rugby in the Women’s game as UL Bohemians contest the Women’s All-Ireland Cup final, while on the domestic scene there are Munster Women’s Division 1 Cup and Plate finals down for decision.

As the season draws to a close, Munster Rugby is also excited ahead of two major women’s finals which will take place this weekend, as UL Bohemians go toe to toe with Blackrock in the All-Ireland Cup final, while in Munster Shannon face Nenagh Ormond in the Women’s Division 1 Cup final, both on Sunday.

Already crowned league champions, UL Bohs’ will look to cap off a memorable season by capturing the cup and achieving the double, so difficult at national level in an ever-improving All-Ireland structure ahead of what’s sure to be a landmark year for women’s rugby with this year’s World Cup set to take place on home soil in a few months.

Some of Ireland’s finest will be involved for Bohs, who took two games to see off a fantastic Railway Union side, winning 12-10 last week at the 4G pitch in UL after a mammoth 10-10 draw the week previous at Sandymount. It will be no easier task however as they face a Blackrock side who dumped out league finalists Old Belvedere away from home, 10-8 in the semi-final.

That game will kick-off at Dubarry Park on Sunday at 3.30pm.

Also on Sunday at 2pm in Nenagh Ormond is the blue ribbon event in Munster, as Shannon face Thurles in the Women’s Cup final. Shannon had a comfortable 26-3 victory over Bandon in the semis, while Conference A table-toppers Thurles put in a massive effort to topple this Conference B winners Tralee at home.

The plate final sees sides from either side of Munster face off, as Dungarval-Youghal entertain Bantry Bay, that game begins at 1.30pm in Bandon.

With the Women’s World Cup trophy currently touring the country it’s an exciting time to be involved in the ladies’ game, and you can follow its progress around the province on the Munster Rugby website.
