Preparations are underway for Munster’s age-grade representative squads as they begin their respective summer programmes with Interprovincial fixtures set to take place in August.

The Boys’ U17, U18 and U19 squads have been hard at work this past month in four regional centres across the province.

The teams train three times a week with both pitch and gym sessions taking place each day.

We caught up with Lead Pathway Athletic Development Coach, Rob Cassidy, who took us through what the Pre-Summer Programme entails and what the players got up to for their first four weeks.

The programme focuses on helping the players develop in both a physical capacity and to deal with the pressures they might come across in their future rugby careers.

They learn about things such as nutrition, recover, sprint tech and mental skills. All of which are key components in creating a fitter, strong and more resilient athlete.

Speaking about the goals of this programme Rob said:

“The main goals we have for them is that we are introducing a load of running volume onto them so that we are prepping them as best we can for what they will experience during the summer.

“It is a five week programme, they are on pitch three times a week, they gym three times a week where they get supervised, and then it is one remote gym session as well.

“What we are trying to do is we are trying to expose the kids to something that they might not be getting in their school or clubs.
