Senior Rugby Roundup

There were some upsets in the quarter-finals of the   Bank of Ireland Munster Senior Cup, as holders Highfield and Young Munster were defeated, while Cashel caused an upset in the Cyril Fitzgerald Plate with a victory over U.C.C.

2025 winners Nenagh Ormond knocked out holders Highfield with a 33-26 home win. Nenagh trailing 26-14 approaching half time, took control of the game from there to the finish. Matt Brice scored two tries for the winners and Taylor Coles, Jose Ignacio Failla del Francese and Luke Graham got one each. Jonty Stewart kicked four conversions. James Brugger, Ryan Delaney and Rian McFarlane O’Shea were among the Highfield try scorers.

U.L. Bohemian caused an upset at Annacotty with a 29-22 win against Young Munster. The sides were level 7-7 at halftime. Greg Fitzgerald, Ola Ogunkoya, Darren Ferrar and Liam O’Shaughnessy scored tries for Bohs and Cian Casey kicked three conversions and a penalty. Liam McMahon, Josh Costello and Gearóid Mulcahy replied with tries for Young Munster and Kelvin Langan kicked two conversions and a penalty.

Cork Constitution reached the last four with a 35-29 home win over Shannon, but not after getting a late scare from the visitors. Entering the final quarter, the home side led 35-8, but three converted tries by Shannon made it a nervous finish for the home supporters. Bobby O’Callaghan scored two tries for Con’ and George Good, Sean Condon and Darragh McSweeney got one each. Aian Moynihan converted all five tries, David Smith replied with two tries for Shannon and Harry Long and Ryan Duffy got one each. Jamie Gavin kicked three conversions and a penalty.

Garryowen were made work hard for their 26-15 victory over Clonmel at Dooradoyle. Fionn Rowsome, Dean Fanning, Bryan Fitzgerald and Damien O’Connell scored tries for the Light Blues and Alex Wood kicked three conversions. Tom Ross and Michael Connellan replied with tries for Clonmel and Josef O’Connor kicked a conversion and a penalty.

Next week’s semi-finals will see Cork Constitution play U.L. Bohemian and Garryowen v Nenagh Ormond.

In the Cyril Fitzgerald Plate, Cashel caused a surprise defeating U.C.C. 24-22 at the Mardyke. James Wixted, Jack Casey and Tom Coughlan were try scorers for College and Wixted added two conversions and a penalty.

Midleton defeated Thomond 31-14 at the Towns Park. Joannes du Toit scored two tries for Midleton and Tom Roche, Oisin Connelly and Mark Corby got one each. Seamus Lyne kicked three conversions. Sam Birrane and Eoghan Sherlock replied with tries for Thomond and both were converted by Evan Cusack.

The semi-final draw for the Cyril; Fitzgerald Plate is Dolphin v Old Crescent and Cashel v Midleton.
