Senior Club Roundup

The opening round of games in the Bank of Ireland Munster Senior Cup got the new season underway with no major upsets in the six games that were played.

Holders Highfield cruised through to next week’s quarter finals with an impressive 57-7 away win at Bruff. Rian McFarland (2), Travis Coomey, Fionnbarra McSherry, Ben Murphy, Jack Quinlan, Michael Kennedy, Aidan Keane and Zack Pipper scored tries for the holders and Shane O’Riordan kicked six conversions. Mike Cooke replied with a try for Bruff and Paul Collins converted.

Highfield will travel to Nenagh Ormond in the last eight, after the Tipperary side had a narrow 17-15 away win against Old Crescent. Oli Ayling was one of Nenagh’s try scorers and Jonty Stewart kicked two conversions and a penalty. Junior Okafor, Ciaran Heagney replied with tries for Old Crescent. Evan Cusack kicked a conversion, and Ben Daly added a penalty.

Cork Constitution saw off the challenge of U.C.C. 28-7 at Temple Hill. Mike Cogan scored two tries for the home side, and Peter Hyland and Sean Condon got one each. Aidan Moynian converted all four tries. Jack Casy scored College’s try and Gene Kareem O’Leary converted.

Shannon who defeated Cashel 27-21, will now travel to Temple Hill for next week’s quarter final. Cathal Ryan and Alan Flannery scored tries for Cashel and Ben Twomey kicked three penalties and a conversion.

Garryowen who received a bye in the first round will host Clonmel in next week’s quarter finals after the Tipperary side defeated Dolphin 34-25 at Virgin Media Park. Ben Masuku and Jake Coffey each scored two tries for the winners and Keith Melboune got one. Dylan Cadogan kicked two conversions, and a penalty and Dean Slattery also added a conversion. Liam Ormond replied with two tries for Dolphin and Charlie O’Callaghan and Fionn Herlihy got one each. Conor Mulvihill kicked a conversion and a penalty for the home side.

Young Munster proved too strong for Thomond at Liam Fitzgerald winning 57-15. Liam McMahon (4), Josh Boland (2), Tom Walters, Kelvin Langan and Josh Costello were the “Cookies” try scorers. Langan kicked five conversions and Jeff Williams one. Jake Connolly and Sam Birrane replied with tries for Thomond and Adam Guerin kicked a conversion and a penalty.

U.L. Bohemian who defeated Midleton 29-14 at Annacotty, will host Young Munster in the other quarter final tie. Josh Kahler, Joe Johnson, Conor Sheehan and Sean Quirke were the Bohs try scorers. Cian Casey kicked three conversions and a penalty. Joannes du Toit and Anton Agassi replied with tries for Midleton and Seamus Lyne kicked two conversions.
