St. Munchin’s College 26 – 5 Christian Brothers College

A historic day for St. Munchin’s College at Thomond Park as they won the Boys Munster Schools Junior Cup for the eight time with a comprehensive victory over Christian Brothers College in their replay by 26-5.

Early pressure by Munchin’s paid off after eight minutes, when a kick by Jack Goode behind the Christians defence saw Munchin’s full-back Oscar Madden gather and touched down for a 5-0 lead.

It was 10-0 in favour of the Limerick side after seventeen minutes. Following a line out which Phelim Hennelly won, they mauled the ball deep into the Christians Twenty-Two, where Madden was stopped short of the line and after the ball was recycled, Hamza Awaga touched down.

Madden taught he was in for Munchin’s third try but a forward pass saw the score disallowed.

Munchin’s spent the remainder of the half camped deep inside the Christians Twenty-Two, but a solid Christians defence held firm to leave St. Munchin’s College 10-0 ahead at half time.

On the restart, following a lineout which Anluan White won, Christians were penalised for a high tackle and Goode kicked the resulting penalty for a 13-0 lead for Munchin’s.

Christians were on the back foot, as wave after wave of Munchin’s pressure saw the Cork side concede a third try in the 36th minute when Elliot Stokes touched down for an 18-0 lead.

Despite a period of dominance by Christians, they could not penetrate the Munchin’s defence.

Goode extended Munchin’s lead with a penalty eight minutes from time.

Following several pick and go near the Christians line, Awaga touched down for his second try to make it 26-0 in favour of the Limerick school.

A great break up the wing by Rory Barry, saw him score a consolation try for Christians in the corner to leave the final score 26-5.
