Pinergy Munster Schools Boys Senior Cup Roundup

The Pinergy Munster Schools Boys Senior Cup knockout stages got underway this afternoon as St Munchin’s met Hamilton High School in Thomond Park and Bandon Grammar face off with Glenstal Abbey in Virgin Media Park.

St Munchins College 29 – 17 Hamilton High School

Hamilton High opened the scoring in Limerick as Noah O’Sullivan crashed over in the third minute. But Munchin’s bit back and scored two tries of their own through Ryan Angley in the 20th minute and Adam O’Shaughnessy in the 26th with Oisin Madden converting the second of these tries.

This brought the halftime score to 12-5 in favour of the Limerick side.

Munchin’s were first over the line in the second half with a second try from Ryan Angley and one from Gearoid O’Brien. Oisin Madden sent the conversion of O’Brien’s try soaring through the posts.

But Hamilton High didn’t back down and score two tries of their own from Jack McNamara and Louis O’Sullivan with Daniel Coughlan converting one of the two.

With the clock close to the red there was just seven points separating the sides.

But Munchin’s put the nail in the coffin in the 67th minute with a try from Darragh Dillon bringing the full time score to 29-17

St Munchin’s will now face Ardscoil Rís in the quarter final eliminator on the 29th of January in Thomond Park.

Bandon Grammar School 35 – 3 Glenstal Abbey

Glenstal got proceedings underway as they kicked off into the Dolphin end of Virgin Media Park.

A high tackle in the 2nd minute put the first scores on the board for the Limerick side.

But Bandon fought back and earned a penalty of there own just a few minutes later.

Glenstal were then reduced to 14 as David Goode was sent to the bin for a high hit.

A tap and go penalty followed for the West Cork side which resulted in openside flanker Robert Collins sniping through the gap and over the line in the 14th minute.

Outhalf Rory Golden lined up the conversion only to send it wide.

Grammar had the lead with a scoreline of 8-3.

It wasn’t until the 27th minute that Bandon found themselves over the line again after a fantastic intercept sent winger Illan Smith crashing over. Widening the gap between the sides to 10 points.

Bandon Grammar got their first yellow of the game on the stroke of halftime as blindside flanker Matthew O’Regan went to the sin-bin.

Running into the sheds Bandon led 13-3.

The West Cork side were first to strike in the second half as Rory Golden sent a penalty soaring through the uprights further widening their lead.

Glenstal were reduced to 14 for the second time in the game as Hugh Heagney was sent to the bin in the 47th minute.

Bandon scored their third try of the day through Niall Miskella in the 52nd minute. The conversion was then sent wide.

The West Cork side were over again in the 65th and the 70th minute with the conversions being scored by Rory Golden and David Fuller respectively.

Bandon Grammar were declared victors with a scoreline of 35-3 and will now meet Rockwell College in the Quarter Final eliminator on the 29th of January in Fethard Town Park.
