Greg O'Mahony scored in Skibbereen's 24-19 away win against St. Senan's

The opening games in Division One of the Munster Junior League saw the major challengers set down a marker as to their intentions for the season.

Defending champions Clonmel easily brushed aside the challenge of Skibbereen with a 51-7 away win.

Nick Thompson scored three tries for the winners, Greg Carroll two, Luke Hogan and Tony Cantwell one apiece. Dylan Cadogan kicked five conversions and two penalties. Greg O’Mahony replied with a try for Skibb’ and Denis McCarthy converted.

Kanturk back in the Junior ranks began their campaign with a 13-10 home victory against Waterpark, Ray Alesana scored a first half try for a 7-3 half time lead. Paul O’Keeffe kicked a conversion and two penalties. Scott Hornibrook replied with a try for Waterpark and Tom Kiersey kicked a conversion and a penalty.

Junior Cup holder’s Bandon defeated Cobh Pirates 66-7. Robert O’Sullivan, Conall Bromwich and Aidan Slattery scored two tries each for the visitors and Olan Crowley, Cameron Blair, Philip Murphy and Santiago Gonzalez also scored tries. Rhys Harold kicked five conversions and Luke Fleming three. Richard Desmond replied with a try for Cobh and Ian Jones converted.

Richmond were 34-14 away winners at Galbally. Richmond had the bonus point wrapped up by half time as they led 24-0. Keelan Stephenson scored three tries, Jeff McNamara and Sean Bennett got one each. Brian Mullins kicked three conversions and a penalty.

Clanwilliam defeated Newcastle West 25-18 with two tries from Darragh Crowe and one by Darragh Burke. Niall Leahy kicked two conversions and three penalties. Damien Kelly replied with two tries for the home side and Sean Herlihy kicked two penalties and a conversion.

Kilfeacle defeated newly promoted Youghal 38-19 with tries from Kevin Kinnane, Jamie Heuston, Cormac Ryan, Conor O’Sullivan, Ciaran Lowry and Brian Roche. Heuston kicked three conversions and Shane Luby one. Adam Malone, Stephen Kelly and Keith McCarthy replied with tries for Youghal and McCarthy added two conversions.

Abbeyfeale recorded a 23-0 away win at St. Senan’s. Derry and Liam O’Connor scored tries for Abbeyfeale. Derry O’Connor added two conversions and three penalties.

In Division Two a late try from Tomas Oige Scannell which Mark Purcell converted earned Clonakilty a 20-18 home win against Thurles. Shane Scannell also scored a try for winners and Purcell added two penalties. Luke Kelly and Conor O’Hagan replied with tries for Thurles and John Lillis kicked a conversion and two penalties. Lillis had a chance for Thurles but his last minute penalty failed to find the target.

Old Christians defeated Mitchelstown 41-20 with tries from Alan O’Dea, Alan O’Connell, Jeff Hodder, Gael Kaleng and Eric Lyons. John Marnell kicked five conversions and two penalties. Tom O’Callaghan and David Sheehan were Mitchelstown’s try scorers and O’Callaghan converted both and added two penalties.

Tries from Jordan Fahy and Jamie Kind helped Crosshaven to a 10-9 home win over Muskerry with Kind’s try coming in the final play of the game. Jonathan Buckley kicked three penalties for the visitors who led 3-0 at half time.

Castleisland won the Kerry derby defeating Killarney 18-3. Mike Cronin and Flor McCarthy scored tries for the winners and Brian Leonard kicked a conversion and two penalties.

Kinsale defeated Mallow 18-12. A try from Peter Cosgrove converted by Jimmy Glynn gave Mallow a 7-3 half time lead. Evan Palmer and Ian Coleman replied with tries for Kinsale and Barry McGrory kicked a conversion and two penalties. Sean Ronayne scored a second try for Mallow.

Fermoy defeated Charleville 11-7 in the quarter final of the O’Neill Cup. Dylan Lacey kicked two first half penalties for Fermoy who led 6-0 at the break. A penalty try put Charleville ahead 7-6 but a Mike Sweeny try gave the visitors victory.

Cork Constitution retained the Dennehy Cup with a 16-5 win over Mallow in the final at Woodleigh Park. Two penalties from Robin O’Flynn had Con’ leading 6-5 but a strong finish by the Temple Hill side that yielded a try from Simon Barry and a conversion and penalty by O’Flynn ensured victory for the holders.
