Junior Rugby Roundup

Only one of the three scheduled Munster Junior Club Finals went ahead as Clanwilliam booked their place in the quarter finals of the Bank of Ireland Munster Junior Cup.

Kilfeacle have moved top of the Munster Junior Clubs Challenge Cup honours list with four success’s after their 12-10 final victory over Bandon at Charleville. Out half Jamie Heuston gave a man of the match performance for the Tipperary side.

Kilfeacle led 6-5 at half time with a drop goal and a penalty from Heuston to a try by Colin Jackson. Heuston added another drop goal and a penalty for Kilfeacle before Mike Murphy scored a late try for Bandon.

As a mark of respect to Bobby O’Brien a man who has served his club Thurles for over sixty years and has been on both the Munster Junior and Branch Committee for many years the Junior Clubs Challenge Shield final between Kinsale and Thurles was postponed.

Also postponed was the Martin O’Sullivan Cup Final between Fethard and Killarney due to a waterlogged pitch.

No new dates have yet been decided for these finals.

Clanwilliam have advanced to the quarter finals of the Bank of Ireland Munster Junior Cup where they will face Cork Constitution at Temple Hill following their 21-9 away win at Cobh.

This was a very competitive game and it was only in the final quarter that two tries from Bryan O’Rahelly made certain of victory for the Tipperary side. Niall Leahy kicked three penalties and a conversion for the winners.
Ian Jones replied with three penalties for the Pirates.

There was only one game in Division One of the Munster Junior League and that resulted in a 20-10 home win for Newcastle West over Richmond.

This result leaves Newcastle West in second place seven points behind leaders Clonmel with just two series of games remaining.

Sean Herlihy kicked Newcastle West into a 6-0 lead after twenty four minutes, before Brian Mullins opened Richmond’s account with a penalty to leave the home side 6-3 ahead at half time.

A try by Tommy Kelliher converted by Herlihy extended Newcastle West’s advantage but a try by Corry Wells converted by Mullins closed the gap to 13-10.
A penalty try converted by Herlihy secured the points for Newcastle West.

The battle for the second promotion place in Division Two looks like it will go down to the final set of matches.

Scott O’Sullivan, Keith McCarthy, Damien Kiely and Tomás O’Neill all scored tries for Youghal. McCarthy and Jonathon Ormonde each kicked two conversions. Craig Airey replied with a try, conversion and a penalty for the Limerick side.
