Girls Excel In Fermoy

Fermoy RFC hosted Mallow RFC in a girls minis blitz last Saturday afternoon that saw enthusiasm and skills galore, despite the chilly conditions.

While Tom Tierney’s Ireland ladies scored their second bonus-point victory to take the top of the Six Nations table, at Fermoy the next generation of rugby heroines had their first taste of the sport competitively as Mallow and Fermoy Minis girls recently played a challenge match in Fermoy last Saturday.

All 18 players in attendance were involved and an initial 20 minute game of tag rugby was played to enable the girls to get warmed up and practice their passing skills. The subsequent game saw some excellent passing and some very good tackles by players from both teams, showing little fear in adapting to the sport and getting involved.

Players’ parents in attendance encouraged all the girls during both games and the coaches were pleased to see how the girls are progressing in terms of learning and using passing, tackling and communication skills in what was an extremely positive day for girls rugby in North Cork.

Fermoy graciously provided some post game hospitality for both players and parents and Mallow looks forward to the visit on the Fermoy girls on February 25th to continue this exciting local derby.
