Girls’ Contact Rugby Blitz At Ballincollig RFC

Girls from Clonakilty and Sunday's Well at the recent 'Contact Rugby' blitz at Ballincollig RFC - Frank Buckley

Some gorgeous weather last weekend in Ballincollig last Saturday set the perfect backdrop for U10 and U12 girls from the host club, Clonakilty, Kanturk, Bantry Bay, and Sunday’s Well as they participated in an introduction to contact day.

This blitz aims to progressively introduce girls to contact rugby, in a safe and controlled environment, enabling them to be better prepared going forward to playing in full-contact competitions.

The girls played touch rugby to warm up, followed by an introduction to tackle technique before progressing to walk rugby games. After all that the day was completed with the girls playing in their first full-contact matches.

The day was facilitated by Munster U18 Girls Coaches Eugene McCarthy and Denis Stevenson, Munster Senior Women’s Player Roisin Ormond and the club coaches. There was a Q & A session with Roisin in the clubhouse following the blitz.

This initiative, and many others around the province, was supported by the Munster Rugby Domestic Game Department.  With excitement building ahead of the Women’s Rugby World Cup, with games taking place in Dublin and Bellfast this coming summer, there has been a continued expansion of the girls’ game, with girls only sections growing throughout the province.

Their finals took place a few weeks ago, and with UL Bohemians chasing another Women’s All-Ireland League title, and Munster contributing several players to an Irish side who were a single game from a grand-slam title, these grassroots courses are integral to continuing the rise of the women’s game in both Munster and around the country.

There is an intention to run another girls only blitz on Saturday 8th of April.  Should your club be interested in taking part please contact Eugene McCarthy on 087-9685339.
