Munster Junior League Div2

Waterford City 23 v Killarney 5

City’s J1 side were back in action at home in Kilbarry on Sunday last. After their defeat the previous week to the same opposition down in Kerry the City lads were keen to put things right in front of their home support.

City’s first try came after 15 minutes, after a good maul captain Andrew Condron got the touchdown. Andrew was on the scoresheet again 10 minutes later after a slick lineout move involving Cian Foskin.

Killarney scored a try somewhat against the run of play just on the stroke of half time to leave the score at 10-5 to the home side.

The second half was a frustrating affair as despite having all the ball and territory City struggled to break down a dogged Killarney side. A lot of penalties and mistakes allowed Killarney field position but solid defence kept them the away side at bay.

City finished with a flourish, two Aaron Foskin penalties took the game away from Killarney. Then with five minutes left big defensive pressure allowed Aidan Power intercept and run in for a try under the posts which Aaron Foskin converted.

City went in search for a bonus point but it wasn’t to be. Never the less a good win for the lads. The squads next fixture is next weekend away to Thurles in the J2 Gleeson League.

U16’s

Waterford City – 5 Youghal – 32
Tries – Alex Byrne
Waterford City U16’s welcomed a strong Youghal side to Kilbarry for the their first league game of the season. City started well and applied a lot of early pressure and were unlucky to go in at halftime 12-0 down. Youghal made use of the wind in the second half and started to apply a lot of pressure and eventually the City defence leaked tries. All credit to the City lads, who kept fighting to the end and were justly rewarded when Alex Byrne crashed over for a well-deserved try 5 minutes from full time. All coaches were very happy with the lads attitude and commitment. Back to the training paddock Wednesday.

U14’s

East U14 League

Waterford City 58 v Dungarvan 12

Tries : Frankie Gillane x 4, Kieran Kennedy x 3, Jack Cashman x 2 Mylo Curran

Conversions : Kieran Kennedy x 4

Fantastic game from our lads this morning who took control of this game just before halftime and scored some excellent tries mixed with good defence, very satisfying for the coaches as it was the team performance we were looking for. Dungarvan started the stronger with an intercept try but we replied with 2 quick tries from Kieran Kennedy and Frankie Gillane who both showed quick feet and strong running. Dungarvan replied with a well worked pick and go try to level the score before No 8 Jack Cashman crashed over off the back of a scrum to put us ahead. Just before halftime Frankie added his 2nd try after an excellent break to put City 24-12 ahead. At the start of the 2nd half City’s forwards gained more control at the ruck led by captain Peter Walsh and back row Rory Smith to create a solid platform for out half Dylan Breen to release our backs, this allowed Kieran Kennedy attack the line from just inside our own 22 and cut through the defence and score, shortly after Jack Cashman found a gap on halfway to sprint through and add City’s 6th try. Frankie Gillane added 2 more tries to his tally after he showed serious pace from some excellent handling skills. Mylo Curran finished off an excellent team try followed by Kieran Kennedy scoring the games’ final try to round off a great day for the team who are really starting to find their rhythm

Get well soon to back row Ciaran Golden who was unfortunately injured at the start of the game.
