Club Notes | Newport RFC Host National School Blitz
4th December 2024 By The Editor
On a misty winters morning in county Tipperary over 100 sixth class primary school children descended on Murroe Wood Park for a blitz organised by Newport RFC and Munster Club and Community Rugby Officer Nathan O’Meara.
There were six schools in attendance on the day fielded nine different teams.
The students came from Newport Convent Primary School, Lackamore National School, Scoil Mhuire Murroe, Ballinahinch NS, Birdhill NS and Castleconnel NS.
They each played 11-a-side games with rolling subs. There were four teams playing at once with two games taking place on each pitch.
Munster out-half Billy Burns also dropped in on the day for a Q&A with the players and even joined in in a game of ‘Endball’ with some of the teams waiting to play.
Munster Rugby Development staff members Ray Gadsden, Noel O’Meara, Kenneth McNamara and Liam Halpin were all on hand to assist with refereeing on the day as well as Ciara Browne and Henry O’Neill from Newport RFC who handed out flyers for the club to encourage the local children to consider joining.
