The Ballincollig Warriors Adapted Tag team have enjoyed a successful first season, providing a mainstream environment for mini players with additional needs.

Around 20 kids with a mix of abilities are currently registered with the Warriors who train every Saturday with adapted games a key focus.

The Warriors began through the work of Robert Keane, a rugby parent with son Ultan a member of Ballincollig RFC, and the help of the Cork Sports Partnership and Munster Rugby Spirit Officer, Emily O’Leary.

Keane said: “My wife Maria and I have three children, two with autism, who wouldn’t be suited to a mainstream team environment.

“We decided to approach the club with the idea of the Warriors team and thankfully the club were delighted to come on board.

“For most of the children it’s their first time being in a team and parents have given great feedback.

“Their children have grown in confidence in every day life and they are putting it down to being a part of the Warriors.”
