The CSP (Club Select Player) programme is a player development initiative in Munster which sees age-grade club players play in high intensity games in the pre-Christmas pool stages of the Pinergy Munster Schools Junior and Senior Cups.
The programme, which is run in conjunction with the players’ respective development programmes at their clubs, sees representation from a wide-range of clubs throughout the province.
Last week we caught up with Dan Lyne, Munster Rugby Development Officer and head coach of the U17 CSP side that plays in the Pinergy Munster Schools Junior Cup.
Speaking about the programme Dan said:
“The Club Select Player programme is basically a squad that we have brought together from the clubs across the province.
“We have about 36 players in the squad from around 15 to 20 different clubs and they have been selected because they have done really well for their clubs last season.”
Dan continued by taking us through the general running of the programme and what its purpose is.
“They will come in and train with us once a week as well as getting the chance to play a couple of games against the A-Schools.
“The aim of this is to give them an opportunity to showcase their skills at a higher level and it gives us the opportunity to see if they kick on and rise to that challenge.”
As they head towards their final game as a team for the season, Dan gave us an insight about what will be next for the players in the programme.
“Looking ahead a lot of them will want to be moving into the U18 Clubs interpro side next summer.
“I know a couple of them played up last summer and are back into their own age group now.
“For the rest of the group they really want to get into that challenge of going and competing for that Munster shirt in the interpros against the other three provinces next summer.”
