Behind The Scenes At The Munster Rugby Senior Coaching Course

We recently hosted our Senior Coach Award as 40 coaches from across the province descended on The Pavilion in UL’s North Campus last weekend.

Irish Rugby’s Senior Coaching Course is for coaches working with 15-a-side teams where players are aged 16+.

Throughout the day the coaches were taken through athletic development, scrum and line-out, backline play, general play in both attack and defence, and kick restarts. After being educated by the tutors the coaches were then encouraged to lead their own drills at different stages to teach them how best to coach certain aspects of the game.

Rugby Development Officer Euan Gee was one of our rugby development staff on hand on the day to put the coaches through their paces.

Speaking about what they got up to throughout the day he said:

“Today we have followed on from two online sessions that we have had over the past couple of weeks with some of our tutors from the academy staff. We are now putting the practical elements of those presentations into play. We did a lot on general play, attack and defence, backline play, transitions, all the kind of little bits we need to cover to be able to coach the game.”

Euan continued by speaking about how important it is to offer coaches opportunities like this.

“It is hugely important to have opportunities like this cause not only are these guys mixing and sharing their own knowledge, but they are able to pick up a few things from our tutors as well.”

Once completed the coaches are expected to be able to identify and rectify technical deficiencies in players.

They will also have the ability to plan, organise, manage, communicate and develop the skills of their players through implementation of both sport specific and generic sport modules.
