October Rugby Participation Roundup

A view of the Nenagh National School Blitz

October has been another busy month for our Rugby Development staff as they ran different events across the province to promote the game of rugby.

The month kicked off with our annual Twilight 10s competition.

Twilight 10s is a 10-a-side blitz for our college sides as they begin preparations for a busy season ahead.

This year’s competition was held in MTU’s Cork campus and had eight women’s teams and seven men’s squads lining out on the night.

The colleges involved were MTU Cork, UCC, TUS, UL, SETU, MTU Kerry and NMCI.

We caught up with players throughout the night to learn more about their Twilight 10s experience.

The rain didn’t stop the fun in Virgin Media Park last month as Sundays Well CCRO, Gary O’Sullivan, hosted 3rd and 4th class students from four schools in the surrounding area.

The schools in attendance were Togher Girls National School, Scoil Nicolas, Bunscoil Criost Rí and Gaelscoil an Tailigh Naofa.

The event was held to provide the girls with a chance to experience rugby for the first time through rugby based games.

Check out some of the best photos from the day below.

There were a number of National School Blitz Days hosted this month in different locations across the province.

Nenagh CCRO Pat Fitzpatrick hosted a very well attended blitz in New Ormond Park with five schools in attendance.

These schools were Gaelscoil Aonach Urmhumhan, Ballinaclough National School, Silvermines National School, Cloughjourdan National School and Boher National School.

Munster players Shay McCarthy and Ruadhan Quinn dropped by on the day to meet the students and answer their burning questions.

Abbeyfeale RFC CCRO, Aine Reidy, also hosted a successful National School blitz last month with seven schools in attendance from Monagea, Dromtrasna, Glengurt, St. Mary’s, Templeglantine, Knocknasna, and Ashford National School.

Great fun was had on the day as all sides showed their skills, enthusiasm, and love of the game.

As well as our Munster staff, there were a number of club volunteers and seven students from the local secondary school, Coláiste Íde agus Iosef, on hand to help for the day, showing the club’s strong links within the community.

They were also joined by Munster players Michael Milne and Sean O’Brien, who happily signed jerseys and answered any questions the young players might have had.

The West Munster 1st Year Blitz was held in Tralee RFC last month.

Tralee CCRO Ronan O’Sullivan was on hand to officiate number of games throughout the day while West Munster Athletic Development coach, Fionn de Quadras, took teams through their pre-match warm ups and a number of primers for contact.

In St. Joseph’s CBS Nenagh the students have spent the last ten weeks participating in a rugby module as part of their transition year programme.

The main aim for this module is to give students an introduction to rugby in a casual and fun environment.

Newport/Nenagh/Ballina-Killaloe CCRO, Nathan Deely O’Meara, has been at the helm of this module as he puts the students through their paces to prepare them for their first blitz at the end of the school year.

This blitz will give the students the ability to showcase the skills they have learnt while also encouraging that competitive edge to becoming the winning transition year class.

Check out some shots of their training sessions so far below.
