The Munster U17 development squad come together for a recent session at Garryowen FC

The Munster U16 and U17 Regional Development programme is in full swing, as Christmas fast approaches.

The players involved have completed a total of seven training sessions within their respective centres, as well as two collective sessions, from when the season commenced.

The October mid-term provided an opportunity for the U17 clubs and schools players to train together and the U16 clubs squad to take on their Connaught counterparts in Galway.

The weekly sessions to date have focussed on developing the core skills of the game and enhancing player technical and tactical competencies.

The Strength & Conditioning programme continues to promote functional competencies and the players have progressed very well in this regard.

The New Year commences with fixtures for both U16 and U17 club players against Connaught at the University of Limerick on Thursday 4 January and the programme will continue weekly thereafter until the end of the season.

The U18 girls’ programme recently commenced an in-season programme with two sessions being held so far.

This season has seen an introduction of a talent identification programme for players transitioning from age-grade to adult rugby and this, aligned with the age-grade programme, will continue to enhance player competencies in the game.

It will focus on the core skills of the game initially and develop position-specific skills throughout the season.

The programme will officially commence in early January with invited players attending a one-day training camp at in the University of Limerick.
