Fixture – Munster Junior League Div 1

Sunday January 14th

Newcastle West RFC v Youghal RFC in Cullinagh @ 2.30pm

U18s (Notes by John Hennessy)

Bank of Ireland U18 Munster Cup Group 2

Waterford City RFC 16 Newcastle West/Estuary RFC 22

Last Saturday we traveled the long road to Waterford City RFC grounds in the Sunny Southeast, in search of another victory on the road this season. It was a blustery day in Waterford but dry.

We got off to a slow start after a long journey this is to be expected. Waterford City took an early six point lead after a concession of two penalties. It would be a tight affair until five minutes left in the first half where we got our first try through great thinking by Cormac Nash who ran in unopposed to score under the posts the try was converted by Charlie O’Doherty leaving us 7 to 6 ahead at half time.

The wind was having little effect on play which was good for rugby viewing. We got off to a flying start to the second half with Stephen Lyons running in a try from the 22 yard line and Charlie again popped the conversion over to leave us 14 to 6 in front.

We conceded a penalty with 15 minutes gone, which Waterford converted leaving us 14 to 9 in front. On the restart we turned over ball and received a penalty of our own converted by Charlie again leaving us 17 to 9 in-front we were not to score again until ten mins left on the clock with a try by Charlie O’ Doherty the conversion was missed and we led 22 to 9.

With changes made, the game ebbed and flowed and Waterford city got what was to be the final score of the game with five mins left and converted it to leave the score at full time 22 to 16. The management would like to again thank the parents who travelled for their continued support.

To the U17 players who are an integral part of this squad, thank you guys for turning up and been available for selection without depth in the squad it can be hard to compete.

To Waterford City R.F.C, thank you for your generosity and kindness in the after game refreshments and food.

Newcastle West/Estuary 12 Youghal 5

Munster Campaign Kicks off with a Win

After a night of hard frost, the match was in real danger of not going ahead. But an early morning pitch inspection put those fears to bed and the game was on.

Early in the game we were struggling to find our groove and Youghal got off to a stronger start. In what was a sign of things to come, we were unable to exit our territory when we had the ball and this time Youghal made us pay.

They broke the deadlock with a good backline move. The conversion that followed was a crucial miss in the overall score of the game. From the kick off, we were able to get a bit of field position.

Once we had possession in good territory, we were able to work through our game plan and build the phases. We then managed to get a penalty, which Andrew Mortell put 10 meters out from the try line.

From the ensuing line out we got our maul rolling and were going over the line for the try when Youghal cynically collapsed the maul for what could have been a penalty try. But Captain Ruadhan O’Connor was awake to the opportunity and with a quick tap, fed the ball to Bobby Donovan, who was not going to be stopped from 5 meters out. That left the half time score at a 5-5 stalemate.

The second half started the same way the first ended, with Newcastle West/Estuary dominating possession and territory. With a lineout on half way, Cormac Browne threw the ball well over the 15 meter and Jack Corkery ran onto the ball and speared through the Youghal defence and to be stopped just short.

Minutes later we got another lineout and this time we went back to the maul and there was no way Youghal could stop the inevitable and while Jack Corkery touched the ball down, it really was a quintessential forwards try. Andrew Mortell added the extras from the side-line to give us a seven point cushion.

From here until the end of the game we did not exit our 22. We conceded penalties but never let our line get breached. It was a defensive display full of heart, desire and will. When there was a missed tackle there were two or three players there to make up for it. It was a well-oiled machine with everyone doing their part. We finished the game dominating defensively and fully deserved our victory. It was a great way to start off our Munster campaign.

Panel: Bryan Mortell, Cormac Browne, Bobby Donovan, Eouenn Ferron, Darragh Lyons, Mike Cremin, Jack Corkery, Conor Power, Ruadhan O’Connor, Andrew Mortell, Jack Duggan, Eddie Murphy, Sean McMahon, Cormac Lyons. Newcastle West/Estuary 45 Nenagh 5

Despite the cold weather on Sunday the U14s hosted Nenagh at fortress Cullinagh. We kicked off a little later to allow the pitch to thaw but this delay did nothing to dampen the boys’ enthusiasm and we were on top from the start.

On 7 mins the ball went through 5 sets of hands from the back of a central ruck to find Callum Mullenger on the left wing who despite his best efforts was just taken into touch a few feet sort of the line.

From the resulting line out they won and mauled well setting up a ruck which Dominic Hayes crashed over from for the first try. Will Madigan calmly kicked from nearly out on the touch line.

On 15 mins fullback Senan O’Brien caught a wayward Nenagh kick and split the defence, dummying the same player twice to finish under the posts. Will kicked well again.

To round of a first half where we were camped in the oppositions half for most of it scrum half Seán Geraghty picked and went from a ruck on the halfway line, and kept going, touching down in the corner!!

It proved to be a bit too much for Will to kick. The lads came out for the second half looking to carry on and it didn’t take long till Alan Finnegan took off from inside the halfway line chasing his own kick to regain and score. Will added the points.

On 33 mins he stepped up again and after a great series of rucks to give the backs some room he went again and got his second try. This conversion was a tricky one and just beyond Will.

From the kick off the boys applied immediate pressure with the forwards ploughing down the pitch Phillip Kearney Aaron Neville and David Barrett taking on huge responsibilities and getting us to the Nenagh 22 where a quick pass saw Killian Lyons slip like an eel through 3 defenders to cross the line.

Will was calm and kicked the 2. Nenagh started to get a bit back into the game and had a period of possession helped by careless penalties from us but when Sean Torley picked off an errant pass on the wing he travelled three quarters of the pitch to score our 7th try. Again Will adding the 2 points.

Nenagh did manage a consolation try with 3 minutes left to play but couldn’t convert.

Final score ncw/est 45-5 Nenagh

A great day for the boys and brilliant for Paul. Paudie and myself to see the boys putting the training they receive into games and applying it well!!!

Thanks to Nenagh for the game and thanks to the parents and players of our NCW/ EST U14s.
