Two Weeks to Barbarians Double Header in Thomond Park

A carnival of rugby awaits on November 10th when, not one, but two Barbarians sides take to the field at Thomond Park.

Barbarians v Tonga

In bringing to a close an autumn tour that also sees them take on Australia and New Zealand, the Barbarians bring their explosive brand of rugby to Limerick when they take on Tonga, another side famed for their expansive and entertaining style.

It will also be the Baa-baas’ first meeting with Tonga who are newly qualified as England’s World Cup rivals at Rugby World Cup in 2019 after beating Samoa in this summer’s Pacific Nations Cup.

As the squad continues to take shape it was confirmed this week that last year’s unbeaten Barbarians captain Andy Ellis returns for next month’s matches against New Zealand and Tonga.

The All Blacks scrum half – a World Cup winner in 2011 – led the 2016 squad to a 31-31 draw against South Africa at Wembley before wins over the Czech Republic (71-0) and Fiji (40-7).

All Blacks’ star winger Julian Savea is also set to line up for the invitational side with the World Cup winner looking to increase his strike rate in Thomond Park.

Savea was the 2015 World Cup’s leading try scorer and has touched down 46 tries in 54 appearances, appearing at international level most recently in the final drawn Test of the British & Irish Lions series.  Only Munster’s Doug Howlett (49 in 62) has scored more New Zealand tries.

The game has a 7.30pm kick-off and sees the Barbarians return to Thomond Park for the first time since defeating Ireland 22-21 in the summer of 2015.

Women’s Barbarians v Munster Women

In creating history, the invitational side also recently announced that a Women’s Barbarians team will take to the field for the first time when they face Munster Women earlier in the day.

Former Ireland captain Fiona Coghlan is among those already confirmed for the Women’s Barbarians.
