An under par Munster performance coupled with immense physicality, good width and excellent defence from the visitors saw Clermont score the game’s only two tries and become the first French side to claim victory at Thomond Park in European competition.
After picking up a losing bonus point, Munster now travel to the Stade Marcel Michelin for Sunday’s return leg – KO 3:15 (Irish time).
Speaking after Saturday’s loss, Head Coach Anthony Foley reflected on the chances Munster had but failed to execute due to poor handling and the loss of the physical battle on the ground.
"We coughed up ball when we had them in corner.”
"We got in a situation with the last play of the game and we lose the ball. That's annoying. That's frustrating.”
"Any ball that bounced, they got it and we would have made hay with that. We lost the physical battle because they were on the front foot. We need to turn that around next week."
