Hook penalty wins it for the Lions

A long range penalty from replacement James Hook in the 76th minute gave the Lions a 26-23 victory over Western Province today in Newlands.

The Lions looked to be well in command against a limited Western Province at half time when they led 18-12 thanks to tries from Ugo Moyne and Tommy Bowe, Bowe also the provider when Moyne scored in the 34th minute.

Willem de Wall landed an early second half penalty to narrow the gap before Martyn Williams scored his side’s third try in the 55th minute.

However the home side replied with another de Wall penalty before full back Joe Pietersen scampered over to tie the game in the 63rd minute. De Wall missed the difficult conversion and after Hook was wide from distance, he made no mistake with less than four minutes remaining to help maintain the Lions unbeaten tour record.
