Bruff RFC by PRO Richard Leonard

First XV:

The epitome of a game of two halves. A very experimental first XV ran out against former Bruffian, Tony Trehy’s Old Crescent in Dooradoyle on Saturday last. With over seven changes to the side from the previous week, this was always going to be a tough encounter. The first half was dominated by an Old Crescent side which made good use of the strong breeze at their backs to get themselves into kicking range, punishing Bruff on four occasions following frustration at the breakdown. Bruff just could not do anything right by the referee at the ruck. With only a single three pointer in return from Bruff’s Dave Maw, Old Crescent Outhalf Mark Woods kicked Old Crescent a 12-3 lead going into the break with penalties on 6, 22,28 and 34 minutes all for infringements at the ruck.

After less than two minutes of the second half the Old Crescent winger Aaron O’ Carroll crossed the whitewash after a fabulous mazy run and despite not getting the extras it looked like Old Crescent had done enough to seal the deal. However as it so often happens, momentum seemed to swing in the game. Bruff, finally getting to grips with referee Leo Colgan’s interpretation of the rules at the breakdown started to apply serious pressure and finally after a very dominant period in front of the Crescent Try-line John Moore crossed to put some respectability on the scoreline. When Paul O’ Brien managed to get over three minutes later all of a sudden the roles were reversed and it was Old Crescent on the back foot. They settled well though and managed to grind their way back into the Bruff 22. They managed to finish out the game there apart from a very scary attempted kick to touch on full time from the Crescent Second Row which almost ended up inside their own twenty two from about fifteen meters from the Bruff line. Bruff’s Paul O’ Brien chasing almost got to it, despite being held back and that would have been an interesting finish. Anyway well done to Tony and his crew and we wish them well in the final against Cork Constitution.

Final Score: Old Crescent 17, Bruff 13.

J2XV:Friendly Vs. Kilfeacle, Lost 22 points to Twenty, Two tries from Paul O’ Shea, Converted by Richie McAuliffe who added a second penalty before half time to give Bruff a twenty point to seven lead at half time. Kilfeacle came out very strong in the second half and some astute strengthening from the bench really lifted their game to bring it home for them, with two further tries, one penalty and a final converted try to bring it home for them.

Old Crescent will play in the final of the Munster Senior Cup for the first time in 46 years, when we take on Cork Constitution in the final on the 4th January.  We last appeared in Final in 1962 when we lost to Bohemians.  Our captain in the Final against Bohs was Billy Leahy snr, father of our current centre, Billy Leahy jnr.  We are still chasing our first win in the Munster Senior Cup, and even though we will be underdogs, our current First team are in excellent form and are capable of winning on 4th January.  We call on every Old Crescent supporter, young and old, to come out and support our team in the Munster Cup Final.

Last Saturday, our First team fought a dogged battle with Bruff RFC in the semi final of the Munster Senior Cup in Dooradoyle, winning narrowly by 17 points to 13.  Old Crescent were the stronger team in the half. Mark Woods was in excellent kicking form, converting four penalties to give us a 12-3 lead at half time.

Five minutes into the second half, Arron Carroll collected his own neat chip over the Bruff defence to score a great try, which wasn’t converted.  Old Crescent were comfortably in front at this stage, with a 17-3 lead.  However Bruff came back strongly into the game in the second half, and scored two unconverted tries to narrow our lead to just 4 points.  Thankfully, Old Crescent withstood the Bruff pressure in the last ten minutes to earn our place in the Munster Senior Cup Final.  However, this was not before our captain on the day, Mark Ryan, frightened the life our of our supporters with his wayward kick to end the game.

Our Seconds game against St Mary’s was postponed until 11th January, and our Thirds played a friendly game between themselves on Saturday.

Forthcoming fixtures:  We entertain Young Munsters RFC in our annual match for the Kelly Cup at 2.30pm in Rosbrien on St Stephens Day, 26 December.  The Kelly Cup is traditionally an occasion for Old Crescent supporters from far and wide to meet old friends, and we look forward to a large attendance on the day.

Our Thirds play St Senans RFC at home in Rosbrien at 2.30pm on Saturday, 3rd January.

Our Firsts next fixture will be the Munster Senior Cup final at 2.30pm on Sunday, 4th January.  The venue will most likely be Dooradoyle again.  We expect to see every Old Crescent supporter at this most important match.

Congratulations to our Under 18 player, Gareth Quin-McDonogh, who was selected to play for Ireland against Italy in Italy last Sunday.  This was a fantastic achievement by Gareth, and we hope it is the first of many in his rugby career.

Finally, it was with great sadness that Old Crescent members learned of the sudden death of our former President, Brendan McElduff.  Brendan was President of Old Crescent during the 1989-90 season.  We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and friends.
