Report | Barbarians Too Strong For Brave Munster Effort

The Barbarians proved too strong for Munster in today’s first game of this historic double-header as the invitational side ran out 12-45 winners at Thomond Park.

The Barbarians got off to a fast start with an early breakdown penalty giving them a lineout just metres from the Munster line.

A powerful maul effort saw May Campbell go over for the game’s opening try which Elinor Snowsill converted.

Munster hit right back a few minutes later when a clearing kick from the Barbarians was blocked down by Chloe Pearse. The number eight chased after the ball, collected it and then released the supporting Stephanie Nunan who scored next to the posts. Kate Flannery converted to level the game.

With the clock on 12 minutes, Barbarians went back in front when they went through the phases close to the Munster line where Eloise Blackwell powered through to dart over for her side’s second try. Snowsill made no mistake with the conversion as the Barbarians restored their seven point advantage.

Munster had a good period of possession in the BaaBaas 22 but couldn’t come away with the important score. Instead, the visitors went down the other end of the field and scored in the corner through Megan Gaffney. Snowsill missed her first kick of the day before Gaffney got her second try a few minutes later which Snowsill converted to extend the Barbarians lead to 7-26.

The Barbarians went over for two more tries before half-time through Blackwell and Maria Magatti as the visitors took a 7-38 lead into the break.

The Barbarians picked up where they left off early in the second half when Vicky Fleetwood crossed for a try under the sticks which Snowsill converted.

Munster were much improved in the second half, particularly defensively, as they kept the Barbarians at bay.

Chloe Pearse got over for Munster’s second try midway through the second half which was much deserved for the home side’s effort throughout the game.

Munster kept battling and they almost went over for a third try with the clock in the red but Stephanie Carroll was tackled into touch just before she grounded the ball.
