Weekend Rugby Roundup

The weather disrupted the weekend’s program with all of Sunday’s adult fixtures postponed causing a severe backlog of fixtures.

Clonmel began their All Ireland Provincial League campaign with a deserved 38-0 win away to Connacht champions Westport.

Two tries from Luke Hogan and a conversion by Conor Cooney gave Clonmel a 12-0 half time lead.
Further tries by Ronan Cross, Darren Cass, David Lonergan and Dylan Cadogan and three Cooney conversions earned the Tipperary side maximum points.

Their postponed game at home to Enniscorthy has been refixed for next Saturday 16th April and their final game at home to leaders Bangor a week later.

Mallow advanced to the semi finals of the Junior 2 South Cup with a 22-3 home win over Ballincollig on Saturday evening.

John McAuliffe, David Breen, David Walsh and Neil Sexton scored tries for Mallow and Breen kicked a conversion.

Cork Constitution booked their place in the final of the Frazer McMullen All Ireland Under 20 Cup competition against U.C.D. next Sunday at Portlaoise after their hard earned 18-13 extra time win over U.C.C. at Temple Hill .
Indeed Con’ dominated this game for long periods and only for some excellent defending by the Students, Con’ could have had the game wrapped up a lot earlier on.

Bobby Smith opened the scoring with a penalty for College after two minutes and Jamie Murphy had Con’ level minutes later.

Murphy put Con’ ahead with a second penalty mid way through the half only for Smith to level on the stroke of half time to leave the scores tied 6-6.

Con’ took the lead eight minutes into the second half in a well worked move Sean O’Leary touched down and Murphy converted.

Minutes from time a great break by Paul Kiernan sent Darragh Dennehy in for a try which Smith converted to send the game into extra time.

College dominated the opening ten minutes but were unable to put scores on the board and Murphy made certain of his side’s place in the final with a try in the second period of extra time.
