Weekend Preview and Fixtures 4th September

Charity Cups continue in Cork and Limerick as Junior Cup competitions kick off this weekend.

The first semi final of the Limerick Charity Cup will be played this weekend when Shannon and Bruff meet in the first semi final in Coonagh on Saturday. Shannon easily accounted for Old Crescent 44-13 last week while Bruff had to come from 12-0 down to beat Thomond 25-18. Bruff on a crest of a wave following their promotion to Division 1B of the All Ireland League may find the Coonagh side a difficult proposition and the home side will be fancied to advance.

The other semi final between Young Munster and Garryowen will go ahead on Saturday week 11th September.

Dolphin who lost the 2010 Charity Cup Final to Cork Constitution last week begin this year’s campaign with a home tie against neighbours Sunday’s Well in the back pitch at Musgrave Park on Friday evening. Playing in a higher Division will make Dolphin favourites to advance to a meeting against Cork Constitution in the semi final.

The other side of the draw sees Clonakilty play hosts to U.C.C. at The Vale. Clonakilty who have made poor starts to their league campaigns in recent seasons will want to start with a flourish this time out and could cause an upset against a student side that are still trying to come to terms with the loss of so many players for a second season running.

The winners will be away to either Highfield or Midleton whose game has been put back to Tuesday evening at Woodleigh Park as a mark of respect to former Midleton President Bill Tait whose funeral takes place on Saturday.

There are three games listed in the Transfield Cup. Newcastle West host St. Mary’s and home advantage should give the West Limerick side the edge.

The Presentation v Old Crescent tie has been transferred to Rosbrien and Old Crescent will be expected to advance.

Young Munster play Richmond and the Junior club side defending their title will have to be at their best if they are to make it to the quarter finals where a trip to Abbeyfeale awaits the winners.

The Cork County Cup also kicks off with Old Christians hosting Bantry Bay on Saturday evening at Rathcooney.

Waterford City play in this competition for the first time. They face a difficult tie away to Ballincollig.

It is an all Second Division clash at Bandon where Muskerry are the visitors. Charleville host Fermoy, Mallow face Youghal at the North Cork venue.

The Douglas Kinsale tie has been switched to Kinsale and the game of the round could be the meeting of Crosshaven and Midleton.

There are four games in the Mansergh Cup two on Friday and the other two on Saturday. Cashel entertain Nenagh Ormond and the home side will be eager to make a winning start.

Old rivals Kilfeacle and Clanwilliam meet at Kilfeacle with both sides anxious to start on a winning note.

Newport host Thurles and will fancy their chances of toppling the Division 1 outfit.

Galbally should see of the challenge of Carrick-on-Suir as they bid to retain their crown.
.
The Dennehy Cup also kicks off with eight ties. Holders Cork Constitution host Old Christians and will be expected to advance.

Ballincollig play Dolphin in Tanner Park in what could be one of the top ties. Kinsale with home advantage should get the better of Muskerry.

Both Highfield and Sunday’s Well travel to West Cork and both face difficult tasks. The ‘Field play Clonakilty and the ‘Well play Dunmanway. Another tie in West Cork is the Bandon v Carrigaline tie where the home club should advance.

The other ties see Cobh hosting Mallow and it is a local derby at Moneygourney where Douglas host Crosshaven.
