Weekend preview 6th December

There is plenty of league action across all the different categories this weekend.

The big game in the AIB All Ireland League is the meeting of Shannon and Cork Constitution in Coonagh. These sides met in the AIB Cup earlier in the season and Cork Constitution ran out easy 33-14 winners. Shannon will be hell bent on revenge but with a full squad to pick from the visitors could edge this tie.

Dolphin will hope to get their challenge back on track with a home win over U.L. Bohemian but the visitors badly need the points to move away from the foot of the table.

Garryowen also at the foot of the table face a home tie with Clontarf, a side that are just three points above them in the table. It should be a gripping contest with little between them at the finish.

In Section 1B Young Munster and U.C.C. meet at Clifford Park with the points crucial as both sides are in a challenging position for promotion. It will be a big test for either side and it could come down to the battle of the kickers that will decide it.

In Division 2 Thomond and Bruff who are in joint second seven points behind the leaders can not afford another slip up. Bruff play hosts to DLSP another side sharing second place. A win for either side will put them into a strong position to gain promotion.

Thomond travel to Clonakilty knowing that this is a game they must win to hold on to second position but with the West Cork side desperately needing the points to move away from the bottom of the table the visitors may have their work cut out to get the win.

Another side struggling at the foot of the table Highfield are away to Bective Rangers and they will do well to take something from this tie.

In Division Three leaders Midleton have a home tie against Nenagh Ormond. The Tipperary side are currently four points behind the East Cork side and a defeat would put a big dent on their promotion hopes. However the home side will be expected to continue their unbeaten run.

Sunday’s Well face a difficult challenge away to Barnhall another side still in the promotion race and the Cork side will do well to return home with some thing from this tie.

The four top sides in the First Division of the Munster Junior League all face each other this weekend.

The game of the day should be at Richmond Park when leaders Richmond entertain Waterpark. The Waterford side are currently eight points behind Richmond and know that another defeat will almost certainly end their title ambitions. The home side are in a confident mood after last week’s big win over Cobh and should preserve their unbeaten run.

Second placed Tralee take on Ballincollig at O’Dowd Park. The Cork side are the surprise team with recent wins pushing them well away from the relegation zone. The odds will be on a home win but Ballincollig’s challenge would not want to be under estimated.

Kilfeacle who share fourth place with Waterpark are away to Thurles and they should add to the home side’s woes with a victory.

Defending champions Cashel are away to bottom side Crosshaven and they should bounce back after last week’s surprise home defeat by Monivea in the AIB Cup with a win.

Cobh Pirates face Clonmel and both sides could do with a win after some recent poor performances. Clonmel have been hit by an injury crisis while Cobh have lost several of their more experienced players to senior clubs.

Skibbereen who got their first win last week with that home win over Waterpark travel to St. Senan’s in a confident mood of making it back to back wins. Recent results have seen the Clare side slip down the table and they will go all out to win in front of their home supporters.

Galbally who went top of the Second Division last week could see Old Christians over take them this weekend if the Rathcooney side win their outstanding game away to Youghal. The East Cork side could see themselves in serious relegation trouble if they lose this tie so they are sure to give it their all.

Muskerry and Kinsale who are still on the fringes of the promotion race meet at Ballyanly in a crucial tie for both sides. Muskerry were disappointed to have lost 3-0 away to Newport last week while Kinsale have been badly hit by emigration with several of their top players going abroad. Muskerry should just about shade this tie.

Bandon host Newcastle West in a tie that both sides need the points to keep in a mid table position. Both suffered bad defeats last week and will be anxious to avoid another setback.

Ennis who share bottom spot with St. Mary’s are at home to Newport and they will be bidding to get their first win, but will have to show a big improvement on recent form.

In Section A of the Third Division Castleisland who have opened up a ten point gap over their nearest challengers, can extend that lead with a home win over Presentation the side in joint second.

Killarney the other side level on points with Presentation should collect the points at home to neighbours Killorglin.

Abbeyfeale should get back to winning ways with a home win over Scariff while Corca Dhuibhne might fancy their chances away to Kilrush a game that is going ahead on Saturday.

In Section B Charleville who took over top spot last week should pick up the points at home to bottom side Shandon.

Two of their main challengers Carrick-on-Suir and Waterford City meet at the Tipperary venue.

Fermoy will be looking to pick up maximum points from their trip to Dungarvan and Mallow should edge out Douglas in the other tie.
