Weekend preview 14th November

There is another series of games in the AIB All Ireland League in what is otherwise a quite weekend because of Sunday’s International between Ireland and Australia.

Leinster sides are currently dominating the top positions in Division 1A of the AIB All Ireland League as the battle begins to hot up for the top three qualifying places.

Dooradoyle hosts the only Munster derby this weekend when Dolphin visit Garryowen. The home side have lost their last three encounters and badly need to win this tie if they are to be in with any chance of making the semi finals. Dolphin bounced back after their first defeat of the season by St. Mary’s College two weeks ago with a fine performance away to Belfast Harlequins in the Cup last week. If Dolphin can field a full strength side than they are capable of adding to Garryowen’s recent poor run.

It is top v bottom at Thomond Park when leaders St. Mary’s College visit U.L. Bohemian. The home side are still searching for their first league win of the season and it would be a great boost if they were to stop the Dublin side from making it five wins out of five.

Two sides that have been involved in the play offs over the past number of seasons Cork Constitution and Clontarf meet at Temple Hill. Both sides have already lost twice and cannot afford another defeat at this stage of the campaign, if they hope to finish in the top three. It should be a close fought tie, with Constitution expected to collect the points and avenge last season’s semi final defeat at the same venue last season.

Shannon are away to Blackrock College and after last week’s heavy defeat in Cork, the visitors will be anxious to get back to winning ways and close the gap between them and the Stradbrook side.

Young Munster play Ballymena at Clifford Park in Division 1B and will be eager to avenge last week’s cup defeat when they lost 20-9 at Eaton Park. The Cookies are currently in second place and will be eager to maintain their promotion push.

U.C.C. are up in Ulster for the second successive week when they face bottom side Ballynahinch. College travelled with a weakened side last week to Queens and were well beaten but if they field a near full strength side than they should return home with the points and continue their climb up the table.

In Division Two second placed Thomond travel to Malone. The Belfast side have lost all their league games to date. Thomond will be mindful that they were lucky to share the spoils last time out against Highfield and will be looking for an improved performance.

Bruff also in a challenging position for promotion face a difficult challenge away to another of the title contenders Belfast Harlequins and the visitors will do well to come home with the points.

After two excellent displays on the road Highfield will be hoping to continue their good run with a home win over DLSP.

Clonakilty after their win over Dublin University travel to UCD and will have a battle on their hands if they are to avoid defeat.

Bottom placed Old Crescent will be looking to get their first win of the campaign when they play Terenure College at Rosbrien.

Third Division leaders Midleton face one of their main challengers for promotion Instonians at Shaws Bridge. This will be a big test for the East Cork side.

Nenagh Ormond still on the fringes of the promotion race should keep up their challenge with a home win over Banbridge.

Sunday’s Well are at home to Suttonians and both side need a victory to move into the top half of the table.

The second semi final between Galbally and Old Christians in the Junior Clubs Shield is the main junior game of the weekend at the County Limerick venue. Galbally have been very impressive to date with only one defeat and that was against Clonmel in the final of the Garryowen Cup. The Rathcooney side will be strongly fancied to advance but they can expect a stiff examination from the home side.

Thurles and Clonmel meet on Saturday in a Munster Junior League Division 1 tie that is crucial to both sides. Thurles are currently at the foot of the table, while Clonmel are four points above them. Clonmel after a great opening to the season seem to have lost their way in recent weeks and will want to get back to winning ways if they are to be realistic contenders for the title.

There are four games listed in the Third Division and all are scheduled for Sunday with three in Section A. The big game will be the meeting of Abbeyfeale and Castleisland. Abbeyfeale’s 8-0 win over Presentation last week allowed Castleisland go top of their section. This is a game Abbeyfeale will want to win as they currently trail the Kerry side by seven points.

Killarney travel to Kilrush confident that they can return home with the points and keep their promotion prospects on track.

The two bottom sides in this section Scariff and Killorglin meet at the Clare venue with both seeking their first win of the season.

There is only one game in Section B and that is the meeting of Shandon and Carrick-on-Suir and the Tipperary side will be strongly fancied to win this tie.

There is a full series of games in both the North and Southern sections of the Seconds League.
