Weekend Junior Rugby Roundup

It was day of shocks in the Munster Junior Cup with three sides who won the competition in the last eight years all making sensational exits.

Muskerry who are playing in the Second Division of the Munster Junior League travelled to Dooradoyle and defeated last season beaten finalists Garryowen 9-6 with an injury time penalty. Dave Foley was the hero for the Mid Cork side kicking three penalties while Alan Gaughan who took over the kicking duties for the home side after they missed several kicks was successful with two out of his three attempts.

The story of the day belonged to Galbally who had two players shown red cards and trailing 6-3 just after half time rallied to beat Kilfeacle 22-3. Karl Bourke, Willie Casey and an intercept try by James Stapleton, who had to run the length of the pitch to score were Galbally’s try scorers. Bourke kicked two conversions and a penalty. Sean Luby replied with two penalties for the visitors.
To add to Galbally’s celebrations their second string had beaten Kilfeacle 30-3 the previous day in the Gleeson League for a great double victory over the Tipperary side.

Cork Constitution were hit by a late rally by Young Munster which saw Ian Cross kick his fourth penalty in injury time to give “The Cookies” a 26-25 victory at Clifford Park. The home side led 10-6 at half time with a try by Cian Clohessy and a conversion and penalty by Cross. Michael Keyes kicked two penalties for the visitors.
Cork Constitution took control in the third quarter and were 25-10 ahead by the fifty second minute with tries by Ed Leamy, Conor Desmond and Tim Dukelow, two of which Keyes converted. However a second try by Clohessy and a conversion and three penalties by Cross sent the home side into the quarter finals.

Cashel who have yet to win this trophy sent out a warning that will be serious contenders for this trophy with a 31-5 away win over Dolphin at Musgrave Park. Pat O’Connor, Brendan O’Connor, Conor Quinlan, Sebastian Lentino and Martin Feehan all scored tries for Cashel and Darragh O’Brien kicked three conversions. Dave Nathan replied with a try for the home side.

Richmond also showed that they were treating this competition seriously as well as going for the league title, they swept aside the challenge of Ennis at the Clare venue on a 37-0 scoreline. Finbar Hogan scored two tries for the winners and James McDermot, Patrick McNamara and Ian Madden got a try each with McDermot kicking three conversions and three penalties.

Defending champions U.L. Bohemian began their defence with a 35-0 win over Midleton at Annacotty. Ross Butler and Luke Homes scored two tries each for the winners and Aidan McNulty got a try and five conversions.

In a dramatic finish at Kilbarry, Skibbereen snatched a 15-10 victory over Waterford City with a last minute try by Declan Coppinger. David Shannon had earlier scored a try for the First Division side and Mark Kingston kicked a penalty and conversion. Sean O’Mahony hit back with a try for the home side and Aaron Foskin converted and also added a penalty.

Crosshaven were 12-0 away winners over St. Senan’s. George Jagoe scored two tries for the visitors and Ger Fitzgerald added a conversion.

Second Division league leaders Clanwilliam had to rely on a drop goal in the final minute from out half Willie O’Dwyer for a 12-10 away win over Kinsale. O’Dwyer had earlier kicked three penalties for the visitors and Kinsale replied with a try by Tadgh Wright and a penalty and conversion by Peter Murphy.

Bruff got their campaign off to a great start with a 19-3 away win over Third Division run away leaders Castleisland. John Carroll was Bruff’s try scorer and Jonathon Ford kicked a conversion and four penalties. Mark Connolly replied with a penalty for the home side.

Two second half penalties by John Sheehan helped Highfield to an 11-5 win over Mallow at Woodleigh Park. The sides were level 5-5 at half time with Michael Cummins scoring a try for Highfield and Neil McSherry replying for the North Cork side.

In the Munster Junior Plate Corca Dhuibhne and Bandon will have to meet again after the sides played out a 15-15 draw in the West Kerry Gaeltacht. Eoin McGearailt and Gavin Curran scored tries for the home side and Cathal Mitchell kicked a penalty and conversion. Ritchie Powell and John Paul Lucey were try scorers for Bandon and Eanna Kelleher kicked a conversion and penalty.

Newcastle West defeated Scariff 41-7 with Christy Berkley scoring three tries and Richard Wall, Richard Langford and Sean Neville getting one each. Neville kicked a penalty and a conversion, Tommy Kelleher converted two of the tries and Cedric Goya one. Robbie Madden replied with a try and conversion for the Clare side.

Clonakilty defeated Douglas 24-15. Ger McCarthy and Paddy Ryan scored tries for the winners and Eric White kicked a conversion and four penalties. Niall O’Connell and Alan Moyles replied with tries for Douglas and Andy Larkin kicked a penalty and conversion.

Sunday’s Well ended Killorglin’s recent good run with a 47-8 win at Musgrave Park. John Verling scored three tries for the ‘Well and Darren Blower, Luke Duffy, Mick O’Sullivan and Dave O’Connell got one each Danny O’Shea kicked six conversions.

Carrick-on-Suir, Killarney, Nenagh Ormond and Shandon all received walk over and advanced to the next round.

Cobh Pirates moved into the top half of the table in Division 1 of the Munster Junior League with a narrow 20-18 home win over Clonmel. Dave McAuliffe scored a try for the winners and Joe Hoyne added five penalties. David Joyce replied with two tries for the visitors and Sean Reidy got one. Morgan Lyons kicked a penalty.

Old Christians reached the semi final of the Cork County Cup with a 20-3 victory over Fermoy at Rathcooney. Gavin Murphy, Stephen O’Brien, Alan O’Connell and Killian Ware were try scorers for the winners.

Cork Constitution caused a surprise in the second phase of the Under 21 South Western Conference with a 6-3 home win over unbeaten U.C.C. Darragh Dunne kicked two penalties for the winners and John Holland replied with one for the students.

Cobh Pirates and Dunmanway remain unbeaten in their section of the Junior Two League South. Cobh Pirates defeated Old Christians at Rathcooney 20-10. Liam Grady, Peter Mullan and Alan Walley scored tries for the Pirates, Conor O’Regan kicked a penalty and Tadgh Hawe a conversion.

Dunmanway defeated Listowel 45-0 with Gordon Brett scoring three tries for Dunmanway, Matt Saunderson got two and Barry McCarthy and Sean Coakley one each. Mark Kingston kicked three penalties and a conversion.

Tries by Dave Griffin, Roger Bevan, Tim Cotter and Gearoid Magner all converted by Pat Ahern gave Dolphin a 28-20 home win over Ballincollig.
