Weekend Junior Rugby Round-Up

Both Newcastle West and Clonmel have bonus point wins in the First Division of the Munster Junior League as Bandon extend their lead at the top of the Second Division.

After defeats in the All Ireland Junior Cup and Munster Junior Clubs Challenge Cup in the last two weeks, Newcastle West hit top form again to retain pole position in Division 1 of the Munster Junior League with a 38-0 away win at Tralee. Sean Kelly scored two tries for the winners and James Kelly, Sean Neville, Com Whelan and Sean Herlihy got one each. Herlihy kicked three conversions and Whelan one.

Clonmel kept their challenge on track with a bonus point 39-6 home win over Skibbereen. Conor Cooney opened the scoring with a penalty for Clonmel after three minutes. David Lonergan got their first try on fifteen minutes and Cooney converted. Ger Hurley replied with a penalty minutes later. Cooney and Hurley exchanged penalties before Neville Melbourne got Clonmel’s second try just before half time and Cooney added the extras for a 20-0 interval lead.
Second half tries from John Gallagher, Darragh Foley and Melbourne plus two Cooney conversions completed the scoring.

Clonakilty have moved up to third place with a 15-11 away win over Old Christians. Declan White, Mark Purcell and Dave Lombard scored tries for Clonakilty and the home side replied with a try from Paul Meaney and two penalties by Sean Meaney.

Muskerry’s title challenge faltered when they lost away to Kilfeacle 22-7. They had to play with fourteen players for over fifty minutes when one of their players received a red card in the first half. The Tipperary side led 10-0 at half time. Conor Hartigan scored two tries for the Tipperary side and Diarmuid Carr and Pat Ryan got one each with Darren Lowry kicking a conversion. Muskerry were awarded a penalty try which Jonathan Buckley converted.

St. Mary’s had a 20-10 home win over St. Senan’s. Keith Ryan and John Barry were try scorers for Mary’s and Sean Lyons converted both tries and also added two penalties. Rob Phelan scored a try for Senan’s and Declan Rowe kicked a conversion ted and a penalty.

Waterpark eased their relegation worries with a 28-10 away win over Cobh Pirates. John O’Brien kicked three first half penalties to give Waterpark a 9-3 half time lead. Eoin Geary replied with a penalty for the home side. O’Brien scored two tries for the Suirsiders and Kieran Butler got one in the second half with O’Brien converting two of the tries. Noel O’Donovan scored a consolation try for Cobh late in the game and Geary converted.

Kinsale still remain bottom after their 17-11 home defeat by Galbally. Phillip Moore scored two tries for the visitors and Sean Bourke converted both and also added a penalty. Colm McCarthy scored a try for Kinsale and Barry McGorey kicked two penalties.

Bandon continued their push towards promotion in Division Two with a 48-0 home win over Mallow. They have now collected maximum points from five of their six games. Kevin Brophy got two tries for Bandon and Mighty Okafor, Gearoid Crowley, Mark Phelan, Jack Murphy and Mike Murphy also scored tries. Richard Walsh kicked two conversions and a penalty and Sean Óg Murphy added three conversions.

The two sides challenging Bandon met at Clanwilliam where the home side defeated Castleisland 15-3. Gavin Hickey and Paul Ryan scored tries for the Tipperary side and Brian Kissane kicked a conversion and a penalty. Connie Reynolds replied with a penalty for the visitors.

Thurles kept up their challenge with a 48-8 away win over Killarney. Eoghan Dwyer (4), Brian Lyons, Joey Kelly and Peter Coman were try scorers for Thurles. Aidan Dwyer converted five of the tries and also added a penalty. Ambrose O’Donovan replied with a try for Killarney and Hilary McCarthy kicked a penalty.

A last minute try from Dean Guilfoyle converted by Sean Hayes earned Ennis a 7-6 away win over Newport. Phillip O’Brien kicked two penalties for the home side.

Presentation had a 23-14 home win over Youghal with tries from Alan Daly and Eoin Lynch. Greg Airey converted both and also added three penalties. Ivan O’Flynn scored a try for Youghal who were also awarded a penalty try. Jonathan Ormonde converted both.

Waterford City had a 23-9 away win over Ballincollig. Michael Hayes and Darren Maye were try scorers for the visitors and Hayes converted both and also added three penalties. Denis Galvin kicked three penalties for Ballincollig.

Bottom side Crosshaven lost 34-15 at home to Abbeyfeale. David Collins, Kieran McCarthy, Michael O’Connor and Brian Collins were try scorers for Abbeyfeale and Tomas Hassett converted all four and kicked two penalties. Robbie Savage and Thomas O’Donovan replied with tries for Crosshaven and Ian Good kicked a conversion and a penalty.

In the only game played in the Third Division, the spoils were shared as Fethard and Killorglin played out a 17-17 draw. Michael Power, Conor Kavanagh and Shane Kavanagh scored tries for Fethard and Richie Carroll added one conversion. Andrew Reilly two and Tony Lynch were Killorglin try scorers and Dave Coffey kicked a conversion.

Cobh Pirates defeated Shandon 14-6 in the Junior Two League South with tries from Cian Connolly and Jack Barrett. Adam Devlin converted both.
