It was another successful summer season for Rockwell College as they once again played host for the Munster Rugby School Of Excellence residential camps.

This year saw the Tipperary based school host three editions of the camp with over 100 players taking part in each of them.

At the School of Excellence, attendees took part in a structured rugby development programme which included core skill development, game understanding, position specific workshops, appropriate strength and conditioning training and teamwork. This all helped to give them an idea of what it takes to become a professional rugby player and what is involved in the training and preparation.

This all took place in an enjoyable but challenging environment where players are encouraged to develop their all-round rugby ability. Throughout the week the players received top class coaching from Munster Rugby coaches.

Speaking at the camp Rugby Development Officer, Ben Swindlehurst said:

“So we have spent the week teaching the lads about building habits and learning and layering on what they know every day so hopefully we get good info into them that they can then pass on to their clubs and schools when they go back into their programmes.

“They get the chance to go to talks on nutrition, S&C, they do mobility work, anything to do with that. We’ve had Gar Prendergast come in and talk to them about the pathway programme so it is not just the rugby pitch it is off field as well so it is a great all round programme.

“What it really does is gives them exposure to what it could look like if they choose to push on with rugby. But overall the week is a great opportunity to learn new stuff and meet new people. So it really is just a good week in general.”
