The Bank of Ireland Munster Junior Cup Third Round dominated the weekend’s action, with plenty of drama, upsets and some one sided games.
In the game of the day, Holders Cork Constitution advanced with a 31-20 home win against Garryowen. The winners led 12-6 at half time and had tries from Gavin O’Riordan, Michael Wall, Louis Kahn, Josh Daly and Luke Sisk. Ronan Byrd kicked three conversions.
Con’ will now host Muskerry in the Fourth Round, after the mid-Cork side had a narrow 26-24 win over Douglas at Castletreasure. Frankie Horgan scored two tries for the winners and Dan Hallissey and Cathal Dennehy got on each. Rob Cahill kicked three conversions. Charlie Devine replied with two tries for Douglas and Ben Costigan and Peter Devine got one each. Patrick Carey added two conversions.
Last year’s beaten finalists Old Crescent advanced with a narrow 31-27 away win at Waterpark. Luke Murphy scored two tries for Waterpark, Brandon Vosloo and Dean McGovern got one each. Dermot Lannon kicked a conversion and a penalty, and Cian Wakefield also added a conversion.
Old Crescent’s reward is a home tie against Shannon, after the Parish side defeated Clanwilliam 26-19 at the Tipperary venue. David Keane scored three tries for Shannon and Danny Williamson got one. Aaron Byrne kicked three conversions. Jack Armshaw, Niall Leahy and Nathan Crowe replied with tries for Clanwilliam and two of the tries were converted by Leahy.
Killarney continued on their great run with a 25-19 home win against Ballincollig. Donnchadh Grealy. Padraic Talbot and Diarmuid Carr were the Killarney try scorers. Grealy kicked two conversions and a penalty, Ciaran O’Brien also added a penalty. Aaron Hurley, Diarmuid Phelan and Robbie McSweeney replied with tries for Ballincollig and Adan Dodd kicked two conversions.
Killarney will now host Nenagh Ormond in Round Four, after the Tipperary side defeated Carrick-on-Suir 35-10. Jack Devanny, Brian O’Rouke and Robbie Tynan scored tries for Nenagh, who were also awarded two penalty tries. Darragh Gleeson kicked two conversions and Jamie Finn one. James Daly replied with a try for Carrick’ and Fionn Barry converted and also added a penalty.
St. Mary’s defeated Dolphin 37-27 at MultiFlow Park with two tries from Paul Curtis, and one each by Paul Loughran, Rob Guerin and Jake Madigan. Adam Guerin kicked three conversions and two penalties.
Mary’s will entertain Mallow in the next round next week, after the North Cork side recorded a 31-25 away win at Cashel. Dave Breen scored three tries for Mallow and Steven Finn and Jimmy Glynn got one each. Sam Glynn kicked two conversions and Barry Taylor one. Cashel replied with two tries from Ben Murray and one by Joey Davis. Marcello Frati kicked two conversions and two penalties.
Highfield edged out Bandon 17-8 at Woodleigh Park with tries from John O’Callaghan, Rob Murphy and Ronan O’Keeffe. O’Keeffe added one conversion. Daniel Lane replied with a try for Bandon and Daniel Coughlan kicked a penalty.
U.C.C. proved too strong for Clonakilty at The Vale, winning 45-14. Tom Coughlan (2), Peter Wall, James Nixted, Chris O’Brien and Rian O’Donoghue were the College try scorers and Daire Burke kicked five conversions. Tom Tyner and Fionn Murphy replied with tries for Clon’ and both were converted by Eoin Downey. College will now host Highfield in the next round.
A late rally by Richmond was not enough, as they lost 25-24 away to Old Christians. Mark Gleeson and Sammy Haberlin scored tries for Christians. Haberlin kicked four penalties and Noah Morris added a drop goal. Dillon Cotter replied with two tries for Richmond and Shane Halpin got one. Shane Purcell converted all three tries and also kicked a penalty.
Old Christians will host Young Munster next week, after the Cookies had a 79-15 home win against Thurles.
Kilfeacle warmed up for their All Ireland Provincial play-off against Boyne next Saturday, with a 45-24 away win at U.L. Bohemian. Kevin Kinnane and Bob Purcell each scored two tries for Kilfeacle, and Adam Crowe, Jacques Van Wyngaardt and Danny Lambe got one each. Luke Heuston kicked five conversions. Oscar Olszewski, Joel Rowntree, Jay Taylor and Zac O’Loughlin replied with tries for Bohs and Matt Coonan kicked two conversions.
Kilfeacle will be away to the winners of the Kanturk v Sunday’s Well, as this game was postponed due to a bereavement in the Sunday’s Well club.
Newcastle West made the trip to Skibbereen a winning one, as they defeated the local side 18-15 with tries from Liam Carty and Sean Corbett. Shane Airey kicked two penalties and a conversion. Skibb’ replied with tries from Conan Farrell and Ciaran Coombes. David Shannon kicked a conversion and a penalty.
The Limerick side will have a home tie against Kinsale next week after Kinsale received a walk over from Charleville.
Scariff booked their place in the final of the Bank of Ireland Munster Junior Bowl Final, after their 17-13 away win in Dungarvan. Sean Tracey scored two tries for Scariff and Martin Daly one. Alex Boblea converted one of the tries. Brendan Cullinane replied with a try for Dungarvan and Dave Hickey converted and also added two penalties.
