Provincial Rugby Roundup

After two rounds of games in Division 1 and 2 of the Munster Junior League, only three sides have maximum points in both Division1 and 2.

Kilfeacle got a big scare at home to Skibbereen, snatching victory in the final minute with a 38-37 victory. Kevin Kinnane, Jacques van Wyngaardt, Ricky Whitney, Keith Bourke, Luke Heuston and Muiri Lambe were the Kilfeacle try scorers, and Heuston kicked four conversions. Skibb’ had tries from Ciarán Coombes, David Shannon, Tom Beare, Conan Farrell, Kevin Coombes and Daire Kingston, with Kingston kicking two conversions and a penalty.

Clonakilty saw off the challenge of Kanturk at The Vale under lights on Saturday night with a 31-18 victory. Gus Aversea scored two tries for the West Cork side, and Jack Ryan, Conor Hayes and Pa McGrath got one each. Niall Barrett kicked three conversions. Denny Donoghue and Sean O’Brien replied with tries for Kanturk. Matt Hooten kicked two penalties and Paul O’Keffee a conversion.

Sunday’s Well also have maximum points after their 40-6 away win over Muskerry. The ‘Well had the bonus point wrapped up by half time as the led 26-6 at the interval. JJ Puna, Alex Guerin, Cormac Kelliher, Damian Kozik, Ewan Kennedy and Emeka Asiegbu were the ‘Well try scorers. Jazz Pendejito kicked three conversions and Cian Maguire two. Rob Cahill replied with two penalties for the home side.

St Mary’s caused the shock of the day; when they went to Bandon and defeated the home side 26-22. Shane Hannon gave the Saints an early lead with a try which Adam Guerin converted. Bandon dominated the opening half and led 22-7 at the break with two tries from Kain Donnellan and one by Dan Lane. Hugh O’Mahony converted two of the tries, and he also added a penalty. Three penalties by Guerin closed the gap to six points and a try by Keith McManus and a conversion and a penalty by Paul Loughran saw the Saints take the spoils.

Mary’s will now face Kilfeacle next weekend, ahead of both clubs participation in the All Ireland Junior Cup later in the month.

Old Christians defeated Clanwilliam 30-26 at Clanwilliam Park, in the game between the two promoted sides. Dan Kelleher scored two tries for the Rathcooney side and Sammy Baberlin, Dave Ahern and Oscar Kelleher got a try each. Haberlin kicked a penalty and a conversion. Clanwilliam had two tries from David O’Brien and one each by Jack Quinlan and Eirebhan McCarthy. Niall Leahy kicked three conversions.

Thurles defeated Mallow 21-15 at the Tipperary venue. James Maher, Tom McNamara and James Devanney scored tries for Thurles and Maher converted all three. Tomas Maldonado and Sam Glynn replied with tries for Mallow and Riley Harrison kicked a conversion and a penalty.

In a thrilling game at Newcastle West, the home side edged out Richmond 27-22 in a tie that saw the lead change hands on nine occasions. Sean Murphy and Cian Tierney scored tries for the winners, and they were also awarded a penalty try. Shane Airey converted both tries and also added two penalties. James Reeves, Graham Kirwin and Shane Halpin replied with tries for Richmond, and Shane Purcell kicked two conversions.

Charleville lost at home to Waterpark 29-24 in Division 2. David Pierce, Scott Nolan, Ben Daly and Dara Ó Grádaigh scored tries for Waterpark and Daly kicked three conversions and a penalty. Charleville replied with two tries from Jessie Smith and one by Zach Biggane. Kian Smith converted all three tries and also kicked a penalty.

Kinsale had a 45-40 away win at Ennis in a game that produced twelve tries. Paul Graham, David Looney and Timmy Lynch scored two tries each for Kinsale and Darragh Mangan got one. Dylan Lacey kicked five conversions. Ennis’ try scorers were Oscar O’Gorman, Keelan Butler, Luke Kelly, Dylan Kenny and Caoimhin Enright. Kenny kicked three conversions and three penalties.

Crosshaven had nine try scorers in their 63-7 home win against Fethard. Patrick Cotter, Kealan Daly, Josh McCarthy, Niall Deane, Jake Russell, Fergal Conway, Evin Dalton, Ronan O’Donoghue and Harry O’Connell all crossed the whitewash. Jack O’Connell converted all nine tries.

St. Senan’s proved to strong for Abbeyfeale emerging 43-21 winners at Jim Slattery Park. Fergal Lawlor, Rian Sloane, James Kennedy, Brian Collins, Conor Ferns, James Taylor and Declan Rowe all scored tries for the Clare side. Rowe converted four tries. Cody Greaney and Tadgh Mulvihill replied with tries for Abbeyfeale, who were also awarded a penalty try. Caomhin Barrett added two conversions.

Ballincollig defeated Youghal 29-23 at Frogmore. Kevin Hennessy (2), Rob Foolkes and Ryan Watson scored tries for Ballincollig and Hennessy kicked a penalty and three conversions. Ryan Coady, Ruaidhri McSweeney and Ben Ingamells replied with tries for Youghal, and Nathan O’Halloran kicked two conversions and a penalty.

Carrick-on-Suir had a 29-19 away win over Cobh Pirates. Jack Boylan scored three tries for Carrick’ and Fionn Barry added a try, three conversions and a penalty.  Cian Aherne scored two tries for Cobh and Jack Worrall got one. Mick White converted two of the tries.

Fermoy and Castleisland shared the spoils as they played out a 15-15 draw at Fermoy. Bobby Ryan scored two tries for Fermoy and Daire Caroll and Peter Finn got one each. Eoin Lacey kicked two penalties and a conversion. Kevin Lenihan, Joe Sheehy, Adam Jensen and Donnacha McSweeney scored tries for Castleisland and Sheehy added two penalties and a conversion.

Scariff were the big winners in the Third Division as they defeated Corca Dhuibhne 47-26 in Tralee. Sean Treacey and Martin Daly each scored two tries for Scariff, and Ger Burke Alex Boblea and Cian Foley got one each. Boblea kicked six conversions. Nicky Moriarty, JJ Williams, Brian Devine and Diarmuid Kirwin replied with tries for the West Gaeltacht side.

Killarney were 29-10 home winners against Galbally-Mitchelstown. Finn Kennelly scored two of Killarney’s five tries, with Paul Moynihan, Donnchadh Grealy and Chris Doody being the other try scorers. Grealy converted two of the tries.

Tralee won the Kerry derby beating Killorglin 26-22. Cathal Kearney, Gavin Peevers, Guilheame Ventura Patricio, Fionn de Quadros and Dylan Corcoran scored tries for Tralee and Stephen Turner kicked a conversion and a penalty. Killorglin replied with tries from Barry Sheehan, Fionn O’Shea, Cormac Doyle and Calum O’Sullivan. O’Shea converted one of the tries.

Waterford City defeated Bantry Bay 14-5 with tries from Cian Foskin and Danny Kelly, both of which Mikey O’Connor converted. Stephen O’Donoghue replied with a try for the visitors.

Douglas got their campaign off to a winning start with a 13-7 home win against Dungarvan. Zach Dinan and Ryan Gardner scored tries for Douglas and Charlie Devine added a penalty. Lar Houlihan was Dungarvan’s try scorer and David Hickey converted.
