Pinergy Munster Schools Boys Senior Cup Opening Round Roundup

The knock out stages of the Pinergy Munster Schools Boys Senior Cup kicked off this week as Ardscoil Rís faced Castletroy College in a wet and wild Fitzgerald Park while newcomers Kinsale Community School made the trip to Dooradoyle to face 2018 champions Glenstal Abbey.
Ardscoil Rís 21 – 33 Castletroy College
Castletroy College were the first team to book their spot in the Quarter Final Eliminators as they quelled a last ditch Ardscoil comeback to take the victory with a final score of 21-33.
The Annacotty natives struck first with a well worked try that allowed hooker Kevin Griffin barrel over in the 10th minute. The conversion drifting just wide of the posts in the aftermath.
Castletroy were in for their second just ten minutes later as full back Evan Boland ran in with out half Cormac Devitt adding the extras.
Ardscoil got themselves back into the game as the close of the first half drew close after a cross field kick from Charles Casey was caught by winger Oisin Healy who turned on the burners and crashed over the white wash just on the stroke of half time. Casey added the extra two to bring the score to 7-12 after 35 minutes.
Momentum shifted towards Ardscoil in the opening minutes of the second half as Cathal O’Doherty crossed the line. Casey slotted the conversion putting the home side ahead for the first time with a score of 14-12.
But Castletroy were quick to log their response as a tap and go penality for the visitors allowed the strong number eight, Conor Ryan, to drive his way over with Devitt adding the conversion.
Ardscoil responded themselves almost immediate as they earned themselves a line out within touching distance of the try line. A rolling maul followed allowing hooker Leo Carman to dot down. Casey added to his conversion tally for the afternoon as he swung the score back into Ardscoil’s favour.
But it wasn’t to be for the home side a as Castletroy’s Robbie O’Donnell and Evan Boland both ran in for converted tries just before the final whistle to bring the final score to 21-33 to the visitors.
They will now face Tipperary side Rockwell College in the first of the Quarter Final Eliminators.

Glenstal Abbey 34 – 10 Kinsale Community School
Newcomers Kinsale Community School brought the fight to stalwarts Glenstal Abbey in a sun soaked Dooradoyle yesterday in their first ever senior cup knock out came.
Glenstal were the old side to score in the first half as winger David Goode touched down in the 16th minute while lock Flynn Cooke crashed over just ten minutes later.
Full back Oisín Rowan added the extras on both occasions to bring the half time score to 14-0.
The Murroe natives were over a further two times in the opening stages of the second half as Rowan dotted down straight off the restart before opposite winger Sean Roche crossed over. Rowan easily converted the latter score to but the side 26-0 in front with 30 minutes left on the clock.
Kinsale rallied and found the line for themselves for the first time through winger John Quinn with the conversion just drifting wide in the aftermath.
The West Cork outfit were in for their second just ten minutes later as centre Cillian Fitzpatrick barged over in the 60th minute.
Ardscoil added to their tally once more in the 65th minute as full back Oisin Rowan slotted a penalty over right in front of the posts.
The Murroe side had one last score in them as Sean Roche ran in one final time to bring the score to 34-10 at the final whistle.
It wasn’t to be for the West Cork side after a valiant effort showed some glimpses of class that can be brought forward into future competitions.
Glenstal will now face CBC in the second of the Quarter Final Eliminators in Virgin Media Park at the end of the month.
