Pinergy Munster Boys Schools Senior Cup Roundup

There was action galore this week as the Quarter Final Eliminators and Semi Final Qualifiers kicked off across the province.

Rockwell College 19 – 22 Castletroy College – Fethard Town Park

Rockwell College got off to a flying start in Tipperary’s Fethard Town Park.

Playing with the wind the home side racked up a 19-0 lead going in at half time.

Tighthead prop Dathaí Lambe barreled over in the 5th minute for the Tribesmen to open up the scoring with out-half, Conor Moloney Ryan’s, conversion hitting the post and going wide.

Gavin O’Dwyer was next to cross the whitewash in the 9th minute with Moloney Ryan adding the extras.

Winger John Fitzgerald ran in Rockwell’s final try of the afternoon at the brink of half time to bring the score to 19-0.

The tide changed in the second half as Castletroy made good use of the wind advantage they now had.

Conor Ryan was first to crash over for the Limerick side in the 52nd minute with out half Cormac Devitt’s conversion drifting just left of the posts.

The visitors were in again just five minutes later as winger Ben Kiely ran in with Devitt adding the extras.

Castletroy held this momentum as they drove over for a third try, which Devitt converted, in the 68th minute. This left just two points between the sides with just two minutes left on the clock.

The Limerick side had one last trick up their sleeves as they set up one final attacking threat as the clock turned red. As the forwards went through the phases the backline sat waiting until centre Robert O’Donnell broke the line at the half way and sprinted in to bring the final score to 19-22.

Castletroy will now meet Bandon Grammar in the Quarter Final in the coming weeks.

Crescent College Comprehensive 19 – 19 St. Munchins – Thomond Park

It ended all square in Thomond Park yesterday afternoon as Crescent College Comprehensive faced St Munchins.

Muchins got scores on the board early on as Thomas O’Brien crossed over in the third minute. With Oisin Madden adding the conversion.

They were in again in the 26th minute as Dan Foley crashed over with Madden adding to his tally off the tee for the day.

Crescent got themselves back in the game on the stroke of half time with a try from Harry O’Halloran which was converted by Alan Clery bringing the score to 7-14.

A break away try from their own line added to Munchins score line at the start of the second half as Evan Quinn ran in.

With just ten minutes left on the clock Crescent replacement Cullen Wiegand touched down with Clery sending the conversion wide. The score now stood at 12-19 as full time grew closer.

With one final push in their arsenal, Crescent’s Wiegand touched down once again while Clery converted bringing the final score to 19 all.

The replay for this fixture will be played on Tuesday the 3rd of February in Fitzgerald Park.

Presentation Brothers College 41 – 5 Bandon Grammar School – Virgin Media Park

2024 champions Presentation Brothers College proved to be too strong for fellow Cork outfit Bandon Grammar in Virgin Media Park yesterday.

The city side got their first score of the game in just the second minute as an overthrown Bandon line out resulted in hooker Ronan Twomey diving over for an unconverted try.

They were in again just ten minutes later as Twomey touched down for his second off the back of a maul with the conversion drifting just wide.

As the half time whistle approached Pres earned their third try of the half as they were awarded a penalty try after multiple infringements from Bandon.

Running into the sheds at half time PBC led 17-0.

It turned into a 14-a-side affair just after the kick off as players from both sides were send to the bin. Adam Barry found himself heading to the bin for collapsing a maul while PBC’s Bobby O’Callaghan was pinged for a deliberate knock on after the restart.

Pres captain Rian MacFarlane-O’Shea was next to be sin-binned reducing the side down to 13 players.

PBC were in again early on in the second half as Eddie Dooley barreled over for another unconverted try bringing the score to 22-0.

Ronan Twomey had his hat-trick moments later when surging over the line. Murphy’s conversion made it 29-0.

Bandon grafted as the closing stages of the game approached and finally broke through as second row Seán Dooley crashed over to get the sides first points on the board.

But PBC rounded out the game with two final tries from Tom Murray and Alex Moloney with David Nolan slotting over the latter of the conversions to bring the final score to 41-5.

PBC will meet the winner of Crescent and St. Munchins in the Semi Finals while Bandon will face Rockwell College in the Quarter  Finals.

Christian Brothers College 29 – 28 Glenstal Abbey – Virgin Media Park

Victory at the buzzer for titleholders CBC as they advance to Pinergy Munster Boys Schools Senior Cup Quarter Final.

Christians were first to put a score on the board as winger Malachy O’Leary dove over in the corner. Out-half Conor Mulvihill sending the conversion wide in the stiff breeze.

Glenstal bit back and crashed over first try in the 14th minute as second row Rory O’Neill ran in with Oisin Rowan adding the extras.

The Limerick side were over again just ten minutes later as Hugo McGowan sniped through the gap of a line out to touch down. Rowan added to his tally by converting from another awkward angle.

CBC find themselves back over the line in the 33rd minute as Sam Healy was driven over after a tap and go penalty with Conor Mulvihill converting the kick that followed.

At the half time whistle Glenstal led 12-14.

The Limerick natives were first to strike in the second half as winger Sean Roche ran in in the 40th minute with Rowan converting.

CBC responded in the 54th minute as Sam Healy touched down while Mulvihill added the extras.

But Glenstal fought back and crossed over for their fourth try of the game in the 60th minute as out-half Patrick Peters broke through and sprinted for the line. Rowan sliced the posts to score his fourth conversion leaving score line at 19-28 with ten minutes left on the clock.

A CBC penalty in the 64th minute narrowed the margin between the sides to 22-28 as the clocked ticked towards the 70th minute.

It wasn’t to be for Limerick’s Glenstal Abbey as deep into injury time CBC earned themselves a penalty. Opting to kick to touch the Cork side mauled their way over the try line to bring the score to 27-22. As the crowd held it’s breath Conor Mulvihill stepped up to the tee and nailed the conversion from the touchline earning the side the all important win with a final score of 29-28.
