Quarter Final action kicked off this week in the Munster Schools Boys Junior Cup as Bandon Grammar faced Crescent College Comprehensive and Rockwell College met Presentation Brothers College.

Bandon Grammar School 15 – 14 Crescent College Comprehensive

It wasn’t to be for Limerick side Crescent College Comprehensive as they fell to an agonising 15-14 defeat to defending champions Bandon Grammar.

Despite the final result the Limerick natives were the first to get points on the board in the 14th minute as Charlie Woods crossed over to open up scoring. Having missed an early penalty out-half Dylan Fitzgerald redeemed himself as he added the extra two.

But Bandon responded ten minutes as scrum-half Joseph O’Sullivan sniped in. Fionn Coppinger sent an awkward conversion right between the posts to level the game at 7-7 approaching half time.

As the break approached Bandon put in a final phase in attack, result in Jos Keating making a run from their half way line to touch down just before the whistle. The touchline conversion drifted wide leaving the score at 12-7 after 30 minutes.

A penalty for the West Cork natives widened the gap between the sides even more as Coppinger sliced the uprights.

But Crescent lodged a quick response as Oran O’Sullivan drove over from close quarters. Fitzgerald added the extras leaving the score at 15-14 with just minutes left on the clock.

The Shannonsiders never backed down from the fight as they continued to pick at the Bandon defence as the final minutes rolled by. But Bandon held strong and in the final play of the game held them up over the line.

The reigning champions will now face St. Munchin’s College in the semi final next week.

Fethard Town Park was the location for our second Munster Schools Junior Cup decider as Rockwell College hosted Cork’s Presentation Brothers College.

It was the Tipp natives that took the victory on the day as they waited until the final minutes of play to kick themselves four points clear as the game ended 29-25.

PBC took charge early on with a try from Noah White which David Collins converted.

Collins then kicked a penalty to put the Leesiders ten points ahead after just 10 minutes of play.

Rockwell College finally managed to get on the score sheet in the 14th minute when James Julian dove for the line from close quarters. Jonty Purcell added the extras to narrow the gap between the sides.

PBC were awarded a penalty try just four minute later after the Tipp natives pulled down a maul, which also sent Jamie Swords to the bin.

Rockwell responded bravely and got over again from close range at the 24 minute mark as David McCarthy touched down beneath the posts. Purcell sliced the posts with the following conversion.

Pres lodged a quick response through Fionn Naughton to bring the half time score to 22-14.

The home side were first to strike in the second half as Ethan Kendrick barreled over to narrow the gap to 22-19.

But PBC responded with a penalty through Collins to edge themselves further in front.

Rockwell continued to fight and with 53 minutes on the clock Jude McGarry touched down to put just a single point between them

As the clock ticked into the red, Rockwell were awarded a final penalty. As the park held it’s breath Purcell lined up the kick and sent it right between the uprights.
