Junior Rugby Roundup & Results

Weather again played havoc with the Munster Junior League program with games involving the top two sides in Division One being called off.

Only four of the scheduled games in Division 1 of the Munster Junior League went ahead and Waterpark’s hopes of staying in the top flight received a major setback when they lost at home to Cobh Pirates 13-10. They have to win their final game away to Tralee next week and hope the sides around them slip up if they are to survive. Eamon Ronan scored a try for the Pirates, Greg Higgins kicked a penalty and Mark Chandler added a conversion and a penalty. David Fitzgerald replied with a try for Waterpark and Paddy Casey added a conversion and a penalty.

Tralee defeated third placed Newcastle West 20-14. Two penalties from Kieran Crowley gave Tralee a 6-0 half time lead. Crowley and Michael Maher scored tries for the visitors and Crowley converted both. Alan Roche replied with a try for Newcastle West and Sean Herlihy kicked three penalties.

Kilfeacle came from 10-3 down at half time to defeat Muskerry 19-10 in a game that was transferred to the Mahon. Mossy Morrissey was Kilfeacle’s try scorer and Gavin Heuston kicked a conversion and four penalties. Jonathan Buckley replied with a try for Muskerry and Darragh Masterson kicked a conversion and a penalty.

A try from Warren Kelly and a conversion and two penalties from Declan Rowe looked like giving St Senan’s the Second Division title as they led Clanwilliam 13-5 with fifteen minutes remaining. The Tipperary side rallied and a try from Dave McCormack and a conversion and two penalties by Brian Kissane saw the home side win 18-13. Robert Doyle scored Clanwilliam’s first try.

Kinsale and Bandon are the main contenders for the second promotion spot and both recorded bonus point home wins with one game remaining to play.

Kinsale still hold a three point advantage over Bandon after their 36-10 victory over Ennis. Peter Murphy scored two tries for the winners and Sean Kingston, Richard Kingston, Pat O’Regan and Ian Costelloe got one each. Sean Kingston added three conversions. Cian Guilfoyle and Michael Vaughan replied with tries for Ennis.

Bandon defeated Youghal 39-0. Richard Millner, Tom Ferguson, Des Prendergast, Cathal Crowley, Mick Beechor, Scott Kingston and Gearoid O’Leary were Bandon’s try scorers and Jack Murphy kicked two conversions.
A try by Eugene Cronin earned Castleisland a 5-3 win over Killarney in the Kerry derby and in the other game Presentation defeated Waterford City 13-10.

Presentation defeated Waterford City 13-10 with tries from Ger Clancy and Alan Daly. Greg Airey kicked a penalty. Waterford replied with a try from Trevor Griffin and a conversion and a penalty by Michael Hayes.

Ballincollig defeated Dunmanway-Bantry Bay 28-9 to move into top spot in Division Three. Andy Coughlan, Paudge Flynn, Willie Schubert and Kevin Doyle scored tries for the winners and Doyle kicked two penalties and a conversion. Padraig O’Donovan replied with three penalties for the west Cork side.

Tries from Adam Roche and Jake Quirke and two conversions and four penalties by Thomas Hassett helped Abbeyfeale to a 26-0 home win over Carrick-on-Suir as they kept their promotion places alive.

Dungarvan lost valuable ground in their promotion pus as they lost 20-12 away to Douglas. Barry Hynes and Niall O’Connell were try scorers for Douglas and Eoin Philpott converted both and added two penalties. Blane Healy and Daryl Ryan replied with tries for Dungarvan and Conor Foley kicked a conversion.

Carrigaline ran out 12-5 home winners against Fermoy. A try from Shane O’Halloran and a conversion by Jeff Abbott gave Carrigaline a 7-0 half time lead. O’Halloran extended the home side’s advantage with a second try before Paul McCarthy scored a try for Fermoy to secure a losing bonus point for them.

Highfield maintained their lead at the top of the Munster Seconds League South with a 22-0 home win over Cashel. Colin Lougheed, David O’Hea, Niall O’Brien and George French all scored tries for Highfield and Colm Downes kicked a conversion.

Bandon defeated Dolphin 10-0 in their final game of their group in the Junior Two League South. Colm Hurley scored a try for Bandon and Andrew Wills kicked a conversion and a penalty. Bandon will now have a home tie against Highfield in the semi finals.
