Majority of games did go ahead in the Bank of Ireland Munster Junior Cup as both Dolphin and Garryowen lose to Junior club sides

The top game in the opening round of the Bank of Ireland Munster Junior Cup was the St. Senan’s v Garryowen tie at Jim Slattery Park and it lived up to its top billing before the Clare side advanced 22-16.
Tries from Fergal Lawlor and Niall Mallon both converted by Declan Rowe gave Senan’s an early 14-0 lead. Garryowen hit two penalties just before half time and then added a converted try immediately at the start of the second half to leave the score 14-13. Rowe kicked a penalty and John Mulready scored a try to extend Senan’s lead to 22-13. Garryowen’s late rally only yielded a penalty.

For the second successive season Dolphin lost to a Third Division Junior League side, when current leaders Youghal defeated them 27-12. Keith McCarthy (2), Aaron Daly and Scott O’Sullivan were Youghal’s try scorers. McCarthy kicked two conversions and Daly a penalty.

Second Division Thurles caused a shock with an 18-13 away win over Newcastle West. Sean Murphy scored a try for Newcastle West and Alan Roche kicked a conversion and two penalties.

Third Division Fermoy came very close to causing a major shock at Clonakilty before a late Joe Lee penalty gave the home side a 17-14 victory. Clonakilty led 14-0 at the interval with tries from Ciaran Calnan and Mark Purcell both converted by Lee. Fermoy rallied to level with tries from Ed O’Connell and Dylan Lacey with Michael Sweeney converting before Lee sealed it with his late strike.

Defending champions Shannon defeated St. Mary’s 33-25 at Coonagh. Bobby Price (2) and Ollie Lyons were Shannon’s try scorers. Barry McGorey converted all three tries and kicked three penalties. Ciaran Cunnane also added a penalty. Sean Markham replied with two tries for the Saints and Rory O’Donnell also scored a try. Sean Lyons kicked two conversions and two penalties.

Last year’s beaten finalists Clonmel defeated Waterpark 24-6.
Clonmel led 7-6 at half time with a Tony Cantwell try and a Conor Cooney conversion to two penalties for Waterpark from Geoff Deegan. Luke Hogan and Darren Cass scored second half tries for Clonmel and Cooney converted both and also added a penalty.

The Current Junior League leaders Richmond defeated Bruff 27-0. Kealan Stephenson scored two tries for the home side and Pat Humphries and Gareth O’Hanlon got a try each. Brian Mullins kicked two conversions and a penalty.

Clanwilliam defeated Second Division leaders Abbeyfeale 15-9.Andrew Ryan and Derek Shields were Clanwilliam’s try scorers and Ryan added a conversion and a penalty. Tom Hassett replied with three penalties for Abbeyfeale.

Cobh Pirates defeated Kinsale 23-7 to get revenge for their league defeat a few weeks ago. A try from Aaron O’Flynn and an Eamon Ronan conversion and penalty had Cobh 10-7 ahead at half time. Sean Kingston converted his own try for Kinsale.
Noel O’Donovan and Eoin McSweeney added further tries and Ronan kicked a penalty.

Two sides struggling in the Second Division met in Ennis where the Clare side defeated Tralee 25-12. Cian Guilfoyle, Conor Dolan and Enda Galvin were try scorers for Ennis and Dolan kicked two conversions and two penalties. Michael Maher replied with four penalties for Tralee.

Tries from Eamon Ring and Michael Lynch helped Crosshaven to an 18-14 away win over Douglas-Carrigaline. Ian Smith kicked two conversions and two penalties. Dan Cafferkey and Kieran Kelleher replied with tries for the home side and Conor O’Regan converted both.

Bandon recorded a 24-19 away win in Kanturk. Ritchie Walsh, Dan Swittenbank and Christian Mulcahy all scored tries for Bandon and Walsh converted all three and also added a penalty. Alan O’Brien and Brendan Cotter replied with tries for Kanturk. Olan Daly kicked a drop goal and a penalty and Stephen McAuliffe added a penalty.

Old Christians defeated Sunday’s Well 20-5 at the Mahon. Lar Coughlan and John O’Flynn scored tries for the Rathcooney side and Sean Meaney kicked two conversions and two penalties; Ethan Ackland replied with a try for the ‘Well.

Cork Constitution defeated Mallow 36-8 in a game that was switched from Mallow to the Mahon. Sean Grey, Joe White, Sonny Dwyer and Greg Roche scored tries for the Temple Hill side. Eoin Lacey added three penalties and a conversion and Jamie Murphy kicked a penalty and a conversion.

Galbally easily brushed aside the challenge of Presentation with a 27-0 home win. Brendan Childs, Kevin O’Donoghue and Sean Bourke scored tries for Galbally and Jack O’Mullane converted all three and added two penalties.

A try from David Hurley and three Conor Lenihan penalties helped Old Crescent to a 14-6 home win over Nenagh Ormond.

Skibbereen defeated Ballincollig 29-3. Kieran Shannon scored two tries for the home side and Dave Jennings, Cian Healy and Tom Bush also got tries. Denis McCarthy kicked two conversions and Richard Dineen kicked a penalty for Ballincollig.

Highfield defeated Charleville 24-3 at the north Cork venue. Colm Gallagher scored two ties for Highfield and Jamie Cassidy and Mark Dorgan got one each. Gavin O’Leary kicked two conversions.

U.C.C. ran in nine tries in their 63-7 away win over Carrick-on-Suir. Rory Slater, Lee McSherry, Cal Healy, Darragh Dennehy, Gerry Ryan, Dan O’Meara, Ritchie Moran, Ian O’Donoghue and Kieran Clancy all scored tries and O’Donoghue kicked four conversions and two penalties. James Rooney replied with a try for Carrick’ which Michael Dineen converted.

A Ken O’Kane try for Thomond was not enough as Cashel ran out 38-5 winners and in the other game Young Munster were 47-0 home winners against Killarney.

The games between Midleton v Dungarvan and Waterford City at home to Muskerry were postponed because of the weather.

Castleisland, Kilfeacle and U.L. Bohemian all received walk overs as Newport, Killorglin and Fethard all withdrew from the competition.
