Junior Rugby Roundup

Clonmel, Kilfeacle and Richmond collected maximum points in Division 1 of the Munster Junior League in the opening round of games and Kinsale were the only team to record a bonus point win in Division 2.

Defending champions Clonmel began their campaign with a 39-3 home win over Galbally. Tries from Luke Hogan and Darren Cass and two conversions and two penalties by Conor Cooney had Clonmel 20-3 ahead at half time. Jack O’Mullane kicked a penalty for Galbally.
Further tries from Tony Cantwell, Luke Hogan and Danny Lyons, two of which Cooney converted saw Clonmel take the spoils.

Richmond back in the Junior League after two years in the AIL began their campaign with a 29-13 home win over Muskerry. Jonathon Tully scored two of their four tries and Mike Kelleher and Brian Mullins also scored tries. Wayne Murphy converted three and also added a penalty. Liam Donovan replied with a try for Muskerry and Eoin Keohane kicked a conversion and two penalties.

Both Kilfeacle and Clonakilty picked up a four try bonus point but it was Kilfeacle who ran out winners at the Tipperary venue 32-27. Dermot Carr scored two tries for the Tipperary side and Josh Featherstone and Stephen Quirke got one each. Shane Luby converted three and also kicked two penalties.

Newcastle West had a 20-3 away win over St. Mary’s. A try from Sean Berkery to a penalty by Stephen White had Newcastle West 5-3 ahead at the interval. Conor Whelan added a penalty and then converted a try by Dean O’Brien. Berkery scored his second try with two minutes remaining.

Old Christians defeated St. Senan’s 16-6 at Rathcooney. A Sean Meaney penalty had the home side 3-0 ahead at the break. Paddy Naughton and Cian Smith scored tries after the interval and Meany kicked a second penalty. Warren Kelly replied with a try for the Clare side and Declan Rowe converted and also added a penalty to earn Senan’s a losing bonus point.

Both Bandon and Clanwilliam making a return to the top flight both lost.

Bandon looked set to get their campaign off to a winning start but a last minute try from Donal Collins converted by Denis McCarthy earned Skibbereen a 28-26 away victory. Kevin Coombes and Michael Limerick were Skibbereen’s other try scorers and McCarthy converted one of those tries and also kicked three penalties. Olan Crowley and Gearoid Crowley replied with tries for Bandon and Richard Walsh kicked two conversions and four penalties.

Waterpark defeated Clanwilliam 18-8 with tries from Mark Molloy and Shane Burke. Richard Hally kicked a penalty and a conversion and Geoff Deegan also added a penalty. Bryan O’Rahilly was Clanwilliam’s try scorer and Niall Lucey kicked a penalty.

Two of the three relegated side made a winning start in Division Two.
Kinsale travelled to Dungarvan and beat the home side 30-5 with tries from Barry McGorey, Paul O’Connell, Sean Kingston, Eoin Kingston and Damo Kozect. Sean Kingston added a penalty and a conversion. Andrew Carey was Dungarvan’s try scorer.

Cobh Pirates defeated Thurles 18-12 with tries from Eoin McSweeney and Mick Keating. Eamon Ronan kicked two penalties and a conversion.

Tralee back in the Second Division after spending several years in the top flight were surprisingly beaten by Ballincollig 16-3 at Tanner Park. Dave Power and Mike Ward scored tries for Ballincollig and Kevin Doyle kicked two penalties. Ben O’Neill replied with a penalty for the Kerry side.

A Cormac Roche try and a Stephen Daly conversion plus two penalties gave Abbeyfeale a 13-9 away win over Castleisland.

Tries from Aidan Power and Joe Delahunty helped Waterford City to a 13-9 away win over Newport. Michael Hayes also added a penalty for Waterford. Philip O’Brien replied with three penalties for Newport.

Charleville back in the Second Division got their campaign off to a winning start with a 16-6 home win over Ennis. A try from Mattie O’Neill and a conversion and a penalty by Damian Leahy gave Charleville a 10-6 half time lead. Sean Hayes kicked two penalties for the visitors. Leahy added two further penalties after the break.

Mallow were surprisingly beaten 10-3 away to Presentation.

In the O’Neill Cup Youghal defeated Crosshaven 22-15. Stephen Kelly, Brendan Mackey and Keith McCarthy scored tries for Youghal and McCarthy converted two and also added a penalty. Dan Donoghue and Peter O’Leary replied with tries for Crosshaven and Ian Smith kicked a conversion and a penalty.

Cork Constitution defeated Midleton 50-14 to reach the Dennehy Cup Final where they will face holders Highfield in a repeat of last year’s decider.

Mitchelstown retained the Muskerry Cup with a 29-12 win over Ballincollig.
