Junior Rugby Roundup

There were some very tight games in the second series of games in the First Division of the Munster Junior League as no side managed a bonus point win.

Defending League Champions Clonmel travelled to Skibbereen and came away with a 23-8 victory.
Conor Cooney opened the scoring with a penalty after fifteen minutes for Clonmel, but Denis McCarthy had the sides’ level on the half hour mark.
Clonmel were awarded a penalty try on the stroke of half time and Cooney converted for a 10-3 interval lead.
Ten minutes into the second half Dylan Cadogan scored a try for the visitors and Cooney made it 18-3 on 55 minutes with a penalty.
Richie Burns got in for a try for Skibbereen minutes later and deep in injury time Luke Hogan crossed for Clonmel’s third try.

Richmond had a 16-8 away win over Galbally. A try by Pat Humphries and a Wayne Murphy penalty gave Richmond an 8-3 half time lead. Jack O’Mullane replied with a penalty for Galbally. Jeff McNamara added a second try for Richmond after the break and Murphy kicked his second penalty. Joe Gouws replied with a try for the home side.

Kilfeacle were pushed all the way by Muskerry at Ballyanly before emerging 11-9 winners. Two penalties from Eoin Keohane gave Muskerry a 6-3 half time lead. Shane Looby kicked a penalty for the visitors. A try by Paddy Bourke and a second Looby penalty saw the Tipperary side edge in front and Keohane kicked a third penalty for the mid Cork side.

Newcastle West had to rely on a last minute penalty from Conor Whelan for a 13-12 home win over Clanwilliam.
The home side raced into an early 10-0 lead with a penalty from Whelan and he converted a try by Declan Moloney.
Niall Leahy closed the gap with a try and conversion thirteen minutes before the interval. Clanwilliam looked like they were heading for an upset when Brian O’Rahelly put them ahead with a try ten minutes after half time but Whelan’s late strike denied them victory.

Old Christians made it two wins out of two with a 23-14 away win over Clonakilty. The home side led 11-6 at half time with a try from Gavin Ridgeway and two Joe Lee penalties to two penalties from Sean Meaney.
Old Christians hit back with tries from David O’Driscoll and Ben Swift and Meaney converted both and also added a penalty.
David Lombard kicked a penalty for the home side.

A last minute penalty from Richard Walsh earned Bandon a 20-19 away win over Waterpark. Olan Crowley scored a try for Bandon and Walsh kicked five penalties.
Eoin O’Connor and Scot Hornibrook replied with tries for Waterpark who were also awarded a penalty try. Geoff Deegan converted two of the tries.

A last minute try from Fernando Gallant helped St. Senan’s to an 18-16 home win over St. Mary’s.
A try by Gallant and a conversion and a penalty by Declan Rowe gave Senan’s a 10-9 half time lead. Sean Lyons kicked three penalties for the Limerick side.
A try by Ger McInerney converted by Lyons to a Rowe penalty looked like giving Mary’s the spoils until Gallant’s late strike.

In Division 2 Kinsale the early pace setters were surprisingly beaten at home by Presentation 16-13. Damian Kozik scored a try for Kinsale and Sean Kingston converted and also added two penalties.

Abbeyfeale were the top scorers of the day running in fourteen tries in their home win over Dungarvan.
James O’Meara (3), Phillip Collins (2), Colm O’Sullivan (2), Liam O’Connor (2), Dean Enright, Phil Daly, Ralph Murphy, and Michael Roche were the home sides try scorers and they were also awarded a penalty try. Steve Daly converted nine of the tries and also kicked a penalty.
Laurence Houlihan scored a consolation try for Dungarvan and David Hickey converted.

Cobh Pirates followed up last week’s win over Thurles with a 35-7 away win over Ennis. Shane Cullimore scored two tries for the Pirates and TJ McSweeney, Eoin McSweeney and Eamon Ronan got one each with Ronan converting all five.
Pa Harding scored a try for Ennis and Sean Hayes converted.

Ballincollig continued their good start to the campaign with a 24-10 away win over Mallow. Conor O’Donovan scored a try for Mallow and Luke O’Brien added a conversion and a penalty.

Tralee were fortunate to beat Newport 15-9 at home as the visitors missed numerous scoring chances. Cian Foley and Johnny Power scored tries for Tralee and Garrett Walsh kicked a conversion and a penalty.
Shane O’Brien replied with three penalties for Newport.

Waterford City had a 27-5 bonus point home win over Charleville. PJ O’Connor was Charleville’s try scorer.

Tries from Shane Brosnan and Sean Nolan and a conversion by Willie Casey was not enough for Castleisland who lost 17-12 away to Thurles.

Corca Dhuibhne won the Kerry derby against Killarney in the opening round of games in the Third Division. Billy O’Connor scored two tries for the Gaeltacht side and Ciaran Collins got one. Shane Griffin converted all three tries.
Brian Lynch and Brian O’Sullivan replied with tries for Killarney and Michael Sheahan kicked a conversion and a penalty.

Crosshaven ran in eight tries in their 50-10 home win over Carrick-on-Suir. James Rooney scored a try for the Tipperary side and Mick Dineen kicked a conversion and a penalty.

Two penalties from Eddie O’Connell to one by Sean McCarthy helped Fermoy to a 6-3 away win over Bantry Bay.
