On Sunday, March 22nd, Clonakilty Tigers hosted a hugely successful Underage Mixed Ability Blitz Day.
The teams that made the trip down to the West Cork town on the day were Ballincollig Warriors, West Cork Jesterlings, and Cobh Pirates.
The reasoning behind this fully inclusive rugby event was to showcase how kids, no matter their abilities, can enjoy playing sport with their friends and siblings, and feel a sense of camaraderie within a rugby club.
The day can only be described as one filled with pure fun, enjoyment, and inclusion for everyone involved.
Speaking about the event organiser, Con McSweeney, said:
“The rugby skills on display from the players were a testament to all the coaches and volunteers involved in Mixed Ability Rugby. You could hear the shared enjoyment being had everyone involved.
“The West Cork Jesters, Ballincollig Trail Blazers, Cork Hellhounds, and Clonakilty Women’s Team were great role models for the kids on the day, showing how rugby can form great friendships and camaraderie between different teams—and that enjoying the game is more important than winning and losing.”
Munster player and fellow Clonakilty club man, Conor Ryan, was also in attendance on the day and was tasked with the important job of handing out the medals to all the kids who took part.
This went down a treat with all involved and we would like to thank him for giving up his time.
The hosts would also like to thank Ann from The Frozen Churn Gelato for providing ice cream for everyone on the day. The kids really enjoyed it.
Overall the day was a complete success and showed how much the teams involved have developed and how much events like this only enrich rugby clubs for the better.
