Club Focus: Highfield Season Review

We take a look back over Highfield RFC’s 08/09 Season.

First XV

Our first fifteen had a good season in the second division of the AIB League, finishing in eight position,
having won 8 of our 15 games, this despite not picking up any bonus points. This was three places
higher than the previous season. We should have won at least two more matches, away from home,
which could have put us in the top four of our division. Once again our home record was excellent.

In the Munster Senior Cup, having been beaten by just two points by Shannon RFC in last seasons
final we were unlucky to lose to Garryowen in the third round of this year’s event by two points again.

We reached the final of the Cork Charity Cup but this match will not now be played until the start of
next season.

Our club captain this year was Martin Gately who was again selected on the AIL Club International
side for his second cap.

Second and Third XVs

Both of our second and third squads had very difficult seasons and were relegated from Division 1 to
Division 2.

Under 20s

Despite having a very small squad to pick from it was a great achievement, by both players and
backroom staff, to maintain our Division One status. We also reached the final of the Cork Under
20 Cup. Well done to all concerned.

Ladies

The Highfield Ladies completed a hat-trick of Munster Cup wins this season by capturing both Munster
Women’s Cups this season having won the Meteor Munster Sevens Cup earlier in the season. They
also reached the semi-finals of the National League and Cup. Two of our players, Helen Brosnan and
Helen Jones were capped at International Level in the Six Nations tournament.

Youth Level

Once again our youth section had a great season. The Under 18s won the All Ireland for the first time in
the clubs history and then secured the South Munster Cup. The Under 16 squad then captured the South
Munster Cup.

At the Munster Rugby Awards ceremony Highfield was presented with the Youth Section of the Year Award for the 2008/2009 season. A great year and congratulations to Youth Chairman John O’Hea and all the coaches and volunteers who gave so much.
