All Ireland League Roundup

Cork Constitution snatched a dramatic win in Division 1A of the Men’s All Ireland League over Young Munster in a thrilling Munster derby tie at Temple Hill, but a late try by Division 1B leaders Old Wesley put a big dent in Highfield’s hopes of making the play-offs.

Young Munster dropped out of the play-offs after their 19-18 away defeat to Cork Constitution. Shane O’Leary kicked two early penalties for the Limerick side before Con’ were awarded a penalty try, to take the lead. John Poland gave Young Munster a 13-7 interval lead with a try, which O’Leary converted. Sean Condon closed the gap to a point with a try, but Shay McCarthy restored the visitors advantage with a try, before Johnny Murphy’s late try in the corner that Dylan Hicks converted to give the home side the spoils.

Nenagh Ormond suffered another heavy defeat losing at home to second placed St. Mary’s College 49-27 but did manage to score five tries. Dave Gleeson scored two, and Dillon Murphy, Willy Coffey and Fionn Higgins got one each. Jimmy Finn kicked one conversion.

In Division 1B Highfield suffered a 19-17 away defeat to Old Wesley a result that leaves them in fifth place. The visitors led 10-7 at half time and had tries from Nicky Greene, Noah Patterson and Jamie Shanahan, with Shane O’Riordan kicking one conversion.

A strong fight back by Dublin University saw them defeat Garryowen 31-29 at College Park. Garryowen led 21-0 at half-time. Sean Sexton scored two tries for the visitors, and Max Clein and George Hadden got one each. Lachlan Stewart kicked three conversions and a penalty.

UCC eased their relegation worries with a 19-13 win over Blackrock College at the Mardyke. All the scores came in the opening half with Neville O’Leary, David Nowak and Mark Hetterington scoring tries for the Students and Harry Murphy kicked two conversions.

Shannon’s recent good run came unstuck in Galway as they lost 27-22 to Corinthians in Division 2A, having led 19-3 at the interval. Kelvin Brown scored two of Shannon’s three tries and Josh Costelloe got the other. Cillian O’Connor kicked two conversions and a penalty.

Cashel eased their worries about relegation with a 26-7 away win at Greystones. Max Riley Fox and Rob Carney scored tries for Cashel, and they were also awarded a penalty try. Ben Twomey kicked two conversions.

Old Crescent remain in the relegation zone, eight points adrift of safety, after their 22-17 defeat away to Wanderers. John Lyons, Brian Molloy and Oisin Toland were Crescent’s try scorers and John Hurley kicked one conversion.

UL Bohemian kept their promotion hopes alive from Division 2B, after their 52-19 home win against Sligo. Kean Sheehy and Jordan Mills each scored two tries for the Limerick side, and Liam Nellan, Greg Fitzgerald and Paul Clancy got one each. Cian Casey kicked seven conversions and a penalty.

Division 2C leaders Thomond lost at home to Monkstown 19-17. Evan Cusack scored two tries and a conversion for Thomond and Josh Tunney-Ware got a try.

Clonmel are just a point behind the leaders after their 31-17 victory over Midleton, in a game that was switched to Rockwell College. Henry Buttimer scored two tries for Clonmel, and Brandon Delicato and Keith Melbourne got one each. Josef O’Connor kicked four conversions and a penalty. Midleton replied with tries from Conor McCarthy and Flor McCarthy, with Seamus Lyne converting both and also adding a penalty.

Dolphin moved up to fifth place, following their 28-7 home win against Ballyclare. Max Abbott, Dalton O’Shaughnessy, Cameron O’Shaughnessy and Craig O’Connell were Dolphin’s try scorers and Hunter Yarrell converted all four tries.

Bruff had a deserved 38-28 away win against Belfast Harlequins. Wiktor Wilczuk scored four tries for Bruff and John Sheehan got one. Paul Collins converted all five tries and also kicked a penalty.
