Despite tries on either side of the interval from Peter O’Mahony and Jaco Taute, a lack of control and precision in attack, coupled with a number of defensive errors, would cost Munster dearly in what was their first interprovincial of the season.  Ica Nacewa twice exploited Munster on the left wing before Jamison Gibson-Park was gifted an easy touchdown when Munster failed to gather Robbie Henshaw’s kick to the tryline in the final quarter.

Speaking post-match, Director of Rugby Rassie Erasmus had little qualms with the result, commenting, “Disappointed to lose and not even get a bonus point out of it but Leinster, without a doubt, deserved to win.

“If you give a try away from a scrum, first phase, and give another try away from knocking on a ball against a quality side like Leinster, giving them 14 points on a platter.

“It was definitely, intensity wise, a step up but I think the mistakes we made were simple errors. It wasn’t like it was good attacking play that led to us giving the 14 points away. That’s the disappointing side of it.

“We made those errors. They didn’t.”

After four wins from five and riding high in second on the Guinness PRO12 table before Saturday, Munster number 8 CJ Stander described the Aviva showdown as a ‘reality check’, adding, “We had opportunities but we didn’t take them. Jaco Taute scored a good try for us after good work from the forwards but we could have scored more.

“We need to look after the ball a lot more, we had 13 turnovers and they scored two tries from our mistakes. That is the lesson for us.

“We need a reality check, going over to Paris won’t be easy. We will need to bounce back and we need bitterness.”

Munster open their Champions Cup campaign away to Ronan O’Gara’s Racing 92 this Sunday at 3.15pm (Irish time).
