2016/17 Champions Cup Launched In Dublin

The 2016/17 European Champions Cup launch for participating PRO12 clubs took place at The Convention Centre Dublin today with Munster Rugby Director of Rugby Rassie Erasmus and squad captain Peter O’Mahony in attendance.

Munster are one of seven PRO12 clubs – Connacht, Glasgow Warriors, Leinster, Scarlets, Ulster and Zebre Rugby – that will set out on the road to Champions Cup glory next weekend, each harbouring ambitions of lifting silverware at Edinburgh's BT Murrayfield on May 13th of next year.

Munster open their campaign away to Ronan O’Gara’s Racing 92 on Sunday October 16th at 4.15pm local time before playing their first home encounter against Glasgow Warriors the following Saturday (October 22nd) at 1pm.  Buy Munster v Glasgow Warriors tickets here.

Drawn in Pool 1, together with Racing and Warriors, Munster also face Leicester Tigers in this year’s competition and speaking at today’s launch Erasmus said, “When look at the pool, you look for the easy games and when you look at this group you quickly realise that you are the easy game. We have to change that perception.

“We’re in the pool because of our own performances last year and we’ll have to improve.

“We’re getting there, it’s going to be a step up in the next three weeks. It’s good to be playing well in PRO12, but there are not a lot of weaknesses in the opponents we’re going to face. The challenges that we’re going to face are big.

“Big responsibility to our guys, understand how important it is. In two weeks’ time I’ll know about it.”

Also speaking at today’s event was EPCR Chairman, Simon Halliday who said, “Close to one million spectators passed through the turnstiles to watch our matches last season and the global interest shown through television and online media also showcases the compelling sport we have to offer through these tournaments.

“This season, we will pass 18 million spectators in the history of the Champions Cup and we are really looking forward to the finals at BT Murrayfield after the success of the events in Lyon back in May.”
