In Pics: Interprovincial Preparations

Rested for last weekend’s encounter away to Scarlets, since returning from a long-term shoulder injury Sherry has made four PRO12 appearances so far this season and crossed for a brace of tries in Munster's most recent home encounter – against Cardiff Blues in Cork. Relishing his return to action, not even yesterday’s less than favourable training conditions could dampen the hooker’s spirits as he prepared for the challenge of Ulster this weekend.

“Even today on a wet day, not a great day to train, I’m looking forward to it. It’s so much better than being up in the gym on your own, working and not getting any results – taking it inch by inch. It’s just lovely to be out scrummaging, mauling and rucking out in the muck. It might not sound nice but it actually is, it’s a great relief to be out there and I’m really enjoying it.

“I have to manage it. PJ Wilson, our strength and conditioning coach, has altered my weights and stuff like that in the gym so I don’t aggravate the joint.”

In looking ahead to Friday’s clash with Ulster, the side’s first encounter since last May’s 23-all thriller in Belfast, Sherry added,

“Even this morning Axel reminded us that last year both games went down to the last kick of the game, one for a draw and one for a win for them. It’s always a tight game, they might have a few internationals coming back. They’re coming down and it will be a big incentive for them to try and beat us in Thomond Park. It’s a big thing for us to try and win an Irish derby so there’s a lot riding on it.

“6 o’clock on a Friday is hard in Limerick. There’s a lot of people travelling from Cork, Tipperary, Waterford, Kerry, Clare, it’s hard to get there. Even for Limerick people, it’s hard to get home from work, sort out the family and then get to the match so we appreciate that it’s not ideal. I’m sure we will get a good crowd and they’ll be as vocal as they always are.”

Munster v Ulster, Guinness PRO12 Round 6, Friday October 30th at Thomond Park – KO 6pm.
