Saturday’s loss sees Munster slip from first to third on the PRO12 table. With all four Irish provinces losing on Welsh soil over the weekend, Ulster’s ability to salvage a losing bonus point against Newport-Gwent Dragons yesterday promoted them to second – going ahead of Munster on points difference.

Glasgow Warriors reclaimed their top of the table position thanks to a bonus point victory at home to Zebre.

Speaking after Saturday’s fixture in Swansea, a disappointed Anthony Foley said,

“It’s baffling for us where that performance came from. It wasn’t in our training in the week, it wasn’t in our preparation but then to go out and give away that many penalties in the game, you are going to get punished.

“We conceded one try in the game when we had a player in the sin bin but I think we had six penalties to zero at that stage.

“I can’t complain about the referee, I thought the penalties were fair and within reason, it was down to our lack of control and you expect to get punished off the park by the referee, and we did.”

Looking ahead to the remaining five fixtures, including home games against Connacht, Benetton Treviso and the Dragons, Foley said,

“The run-in could be the difference. We've three games at home and it's very important we take advantage of those games.

“Other teams around us are a bit different, the Ospreys have to play Glasgow, and there are a few tasty fixtures coming up like that, so there is still a lot of rugby to be played.

“You'd like to get straight back on the horse. But we've got three weeks off before we play Connacht and we have to make sure we right the wrongs from this game.”

Munster play Connacht at Thomond Park on Saturday March 28th, Benetton Treviso at Irish Independent Park on Saturday April 25th and Newport-Gwent Dragons – also in Cork – on the weekend of May 15/16/17th (date and kick-off time TBA).
