Munster In The Community

The past four weeks has seen Munster Rugby lend its support to a number of charity and community initiatives throughout the province and beyond.

Breakthrough Cancer Research
Breakthrough Cancer Research funds the efficient and effective development of new treatments for cancer, working to significantly impact the number of people who can survive this disease.

The charity’s Valentines Ball took place on February 7th at the Fota Island resort and in support of the event, the province donated a pair of tickets for Munster’s Guinness PRO12 clash against Cardiff Blues on Valentines Night to each table, with a number of tickets also upgraded to stand seating on the night.

Extern Ireland
Extern Ireland provides support to young people, their families and/or carers who have issues which are challenging and complex, focusing on four main areas; outreach and accommodation services for those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, early intervention and prevention for children, young people and their families; supporting community and public safety through outreach and accommodation services and monitoring and supervision of those who have offended and are resettling in the community; and learning and skills development for those who are marginalised within the community due to homelessness, exclusion and/or a forensic history.

Munster Rugby were delighted to host a number of the charity’s staff and clients at the aforementioned Cardiff Blues clash at Irish Independent Park in Cork, and with Munster scoring three tries and winning 33-16 on the night, a great time was had by all!

Fermoy Minis Jersey Presentation
Munster Rugby’s official car partner SEAT and Blackwater Motors are proud to sponsor the Fermoy Minis. Munster players Dave Kilcoyne, Ronan O’Mahony and Eusebio Guinazu were on hand to present the jerseys and meet with a number of the Minis players afterwards.

Relay for Life
Last Friday, Munster’s Dave O’Callaghan, Niall Scannell and Kevin O’Byrne joined UCC students, staff and community members in taking turns to walk the Mardyke Arena running track over the course of 24 hours. In its first year, Relay for Life UCC raised over €;21,000 and just last year, raised over €;45,000 for the Irish Cancer Society.

In following the Relay for Life motto of ‘‘Celebrate, Remember, Fight Back’’, the event opened with a ceremony celebrating cancer survivors – the beacons of hope for the event. A remembrance ceremony also took place as night fell with the track lined with ‘candles of hope’. The final element was to ‘fight back’ by using the event to highlight specific issues relating to cancer.

NGN Sevens Auction
The NGN 7s is a charity rugby team founded in conjunction with the Spence family in memory of former Ulster centre Nevin Spence, his brother Graham and father Noel who all tragically passed away in a farming accident in 2012.

Munster Rugby donated a player issue number 9 jersey which will in turn be auctioned to raise funds for the NICFC (Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children), of which Nevin was an ambassador.
